we're feeling the love part deux

OK...Christine and I stumbled upon another bit of beauty blog love while checking out our must-daily-read, Beauty Girl Musings.

The insanely gorgeous and just divine Monique, gave us such a great shout out that we had to return the favor.

If you haven't checked out her blog yet, what's stopping you?

It's adorable, informative, funny, and like getting a great big hug from your best friend...every time you read it.

Seriously...check her out.

We know you'll love her too!

jo malone dark amber and ginger lily bath oil

Truth be told, I am a shower person.

While I love the idea of settling into a hot bath and soaking my cares away...it just isn't in me.

I love the efficiency of showers. I also love how clean I feel after, because I'm able to rinse off the gunk as opposed to marinating in it.

Eww.

So why am I talking about a new bath oil from Jo Malone you ask?

Well, for one, I love Jo Malone fragrances...they are delish.

Her packaging is also lovely.

Imagine this sitting next to your bath tub on display...gorgeous.

And if anyone is going to get me to change my mind, it's Jo Malone and her new bath oil...Dark Amber and Ginger Lily ($100 neimanmarcus.com).

OK...yes...it is not cheap.

But as baths are luxuries, so is a bath oil from Jo Malone.

It's described as a sensual and calming blend that encourages a sense of tranquility. It's scent is also inspired by ancient Japanese incense ceremonies.

I don't think that you'll see that description on a box of Calgon.

Either way, it's something I'll have to check out. I am curious about the scent and want to see if it's as intoxicating as it seems.

Look for a future review.

elizabeth grant anti-wrinkle pen

When Christine and I were recently given the opportunity to try out some skincare from Elizabeth Grant, I jumped at the chance.

I am all about the skincare.

I have been an avid user of moisturizers for as long as I can remember.

I started using eye cremes in my teens...that's how serious I am about preventing wrinkles. So, you can imagine how floored I was when Christine told me she never used an eye creme before. Never.

Needless to say, when the sample products came, I quickly put the eye creme into her hands for her to start using. I mean, really....I really felt I did some good that day. I felt like a beauty Goodwill ambassador or something. (You can read her review of the Elizabeth Grant Eye Creme here)

One of the other products offered had me at anti-wrinkle.

It's Elizabeth Grant's Anti Wrinkle Pen ($49.99) and it's become one of my favorite products in my anti-aging arsenal.

Now, I need to point out that I do not have deep wrinkles. Remember, I have been an avid moisturizer (and I should say sunscreen user) since my early teens. Plus with the gene card dealt from my mom, I'm fortunate enough to really have very little in the fine line department (don't feel too jealous, that gene pool also dealt me the look-at-a-piece-of-cake-and-gain-20-pounds card). But, if you look closely enough, they are there.

What's genius about this product, is that it helps to reduce the appearance of lines over time. I've been using the product for a couple of weeks now, and I have noticed some improvement. I should also mention that when you first apply the product (under or over makeup by the way) it seems to diminish the lines almost instantly.

Really.

It's also very portable and easy to use. The top has a soft tip, where the product comes out of. You just click the bottom a few times and apply. Simple.

Here's a little from the product summary, courtesy of Elizabeth Grant online...

The Anti Wrinkle Pen is formulated to fill up the surface appearance of the volume of the wrinkle and strengthen the area helping to repair and rejuvenate the appearance of the skin. On application the skin immediately feels smoother and firmer. With regular use the appearance of the lines diminish. Anti Wrinkle Pen has immediate effects due to the cushioning action as well as long term benefits from the active raw materials included in this compound.

See what I mean?

Genius.

All I have to say is try it out for yourself...I think you might like what you see.

elizabeth grant eye cream

For the last few weeks I have been trying Elizabeth Grant's Biocollasis™ Advanced Cellular Eye Cream. Elizabethgrant.com describes the eye cream as "a deep wrinkle intensive treatment for the eye area. Contains the Biocollasis™ compound that not only helps repair fine lines and crow’s feet but also helps to prevent the appearance of lines. This important treatment maintains the look of younger looking eyes for longer... and also contains a high concentration of Elizabeth Grant’s exceptional hydrating compound to help keep the eye area plump full of moisture and help redefine the contour of the eye area."

I have to say upfront, I do not use eye creams regularly. I always knew one day I would have to start but I never gave the whole thing much thought, especially since there are so many different kinds that treat so many different combinations of problems. I get lectured every time I go to my favorite Bobbi Brown makeup artist on the importance of eye cream. I don't disagree with her, I just have no clue what I'm doing or what I need. For example, when I received this eye cream, I had to ask Jennifer how to apply it and it made me a little nervous because it came with it's own little spoon. I was totally in over my head.

I have to say, my husband is doomed. I should have started with a much lower quality eye cream as my "starter" because I really, really like this one.

I know you are probably thinking, how does she know what she likes, she doesn't even know what the little spoon thing is for?

Well, that's easy for me to answer. The last couple weeks my family had some health scares (don't worry - they are doing better). But my point is, there were a lot of tears and I puff up like a....puffer fish is all I can think of. With the first tear my eyes are instantly red and puffy and they stay puffy for a day or two. And add in crazy allergy season springing up and my son being up off and on during the night the last 2 weeks and my eyes are done - sunglasses are my best friend in these situations.

Since I started using this eye cream my eyes have not been swollen at all and there have been no dark circles - nothing...at all. This stuff is amazing. I totally look like I have been sleeping more than 5 or 6 hours a night for the last few weeks and you never would have guessed I have allergies (other than the constant sneezing). I have also noticed that my makeup goes on a lot easier in the undereye area - I usually use a corrector and YSL Touche Eclat. The corrector goes on smoother with minimal tugging and stays put for most of the day.

Now for the not so good news, the wonderful eye cream is $80. But there is a positive. A little bit goes a long, long way. It would last you quite a while. I have been using it for about 3 weeks, twice a day and I maybe have used 1/4 of the product. Check out elizabethgrant.com for more information and other products she has available.

skinn cosmetics

I don't know about you, but I love it when you actually get to see a makeup artist work their magic on a client.

Admit it, when you're at the mall and you pass through the beauty department, you are tempted to stop and eavesdrop on a MUA and a customer to see what they're doing and get some free tips.

-Highlight, Blush, Bronze & Sculpt Compact

bobbi brown almost bare

I would love to be a cosmetic giant like Bobbi Brown.

Imagine being able to walk up to your fragrance creators (or whatever they are called) and say...

Alright guys, I'm in the mood for a new scent. Something floral-y and jasmine-y. Oh. And could you throw in some warmth? Maybe something like...amber...yeah amber! OK? Make it happen people!

And then, because you can, you say...

Oh, I almost forgot, could you add some violet and maybe some cedar? OK? Great. I'll be in my office. Tootles!

Well, I doubt that's how the scenario went down when Bobbi Brown created her new fragrance Bobbi Brown Almost Bare ($60 neimanmarcus.com).

But, I would have loved to see the creative process involved with this new scent.

It's said to be a sexy and fresh floral, with Italian Bergamot and Violet Leaves. Notes of Soft Muguet and Jasmine Petals combine with the warmth of Cedar and Amber.

Now, I am not going to claim to be a fragrance expert. I don't know my top note from my bottom note.

Really. It's true.

But, what I do know, is that I love florals...especially one's described as being sexy and fresh. And Jasmine? I love jasmine, so this definitely is one I'll be checking out once it's available (it's only available for pre-order now).

In other Bobbi news....

eye makeup removers

I bounce between 2 different eye makeup removers. I have really sensitive skin under my eyes. So much so, that almost anything I put in the eye area normally stings quite a bit. My goal has been to find the product that produces the least amount of stinging.

I was solely using Clinique's Take The Day Off Makeup Remover For Lids, Lashes & Lips and then several people recommended Neutrogena's Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover. I went out and bought it since it was only $4.99 at my local Target.

For the next few weeks I conducted a little experiment (on the nights I remembered I was conducting a little experiment)....I wanted to know what the difference was between the 2, since they almost look identical, and if there was a difference between using a cotton ball versus a cotton square.

So, what I did was wear a different mascara each day and use one remover with a cotton ball, then go through the process again with a cotton square. And then repeat with the other remover. It took a lot of time, especially since I forgot most days which combination of mascara/remover/ball or square I was supposed to be using. I think I ended up trying each combo several times.

OK, onto the results....

Let's discuss Clinique's Take the Day Off. I definitely noticed irritation with using a cotton ball and you all know how much I love my LashBlast mascara and that it requires extra remover so this was a rough combination for me. But with my Clinique mascara it comes off great, but still irritated. Then I switched to using a cotton square, as Jennifer mentioned in one her earlier posts on makeup removers, cotton squares are supposed to be gentler on the delicate eye area (click here to visit her posting). The cotton square did make a difference. There was far less irritation and stinging.

This is what clinique.com says about their remover: Totally tugless, two-way formula speeds the departure of hard-to-remove eye and lip makeups. Even waterproof mascara. Safe for contact lens wearers. They also mention to hold the cotton ball on the eye for several seconds before wiping downward. I found this did help take more off and required less number of cotton balls especially with the LashBlast.

Now for Neutrogena and their Oil Free Eye Makeup Remover. Regardless of cotton ball or cotton square, I have absolutely no stinging or irritation when I use this product. And that includes all the mascaras I have, even waterproof and the LashBlast. Although, I have noticed that I need to let the cotton ball sit on the eye for a little longer than when I use the Clinique remover. But that is a small price to pay.

Here is what Neutrogena.com says about their remover: Forget harsh tugging and pulling. This ultra-gentle dual phase formula activates when shaken to remove all eye makeup—even waterproof mascara—without any greasy residue. It is ophthalmologist tested, safe for contact lens wearers and oil free.

I just read both descriptions and they almost say the exact same thing. Explains why they look so similar.

I recommend both makeup removers, just make sure you use cotton squares with the Clinique remover if you are a delicate flower like myself. As I mentioned earlier, Neutrogena's remover is $5 and Clinique's is around $15 depending on where you buy it. If the Neutrogena remover had never been recommended to me, I would have gladly kept on using the Clinique remover. Even now that my little experiment is over I still switch between the 2 depending on which mascara I have on and which bottle I see first.

chanel glossimers

Welcome to my new obsession...Chanel Glossimers.

What's not to love about this product?

Luxurious packaging? Check.

Easy to use applicator? Check.

Gorgeous colors? Check.

The adorable interlocking C's on the cap? Check.

Price? Um...$26...definitely steep, but come on...it's Chanel people!

I purchased three new colors a couple of weeks ago and love every single one. I'm loving Spark, a luscious berry with golden flecks. I'm also partial to Gazelle*, a to-die-for peach with a hint of luminescence. My final love is Equinoxe, a sheer berry with more flecks of gold.

They smooth on like a dream and deliver great color to my lips. Because of the varying undertones in the gloss, I really am able to wear them with any blush color.

Versatility makes me very happy.

So go out and get yourself a Glossimer lippie. But, be warned, you will not be able to stop at one.

this just in...pump up the volume

Although I'm not one for big hair, there are times when I need to take the volume up a notch.

One way to achieve gorgeous and touchable volume, is to apply a thickening spray to the roots only while the hair is damp. A good one to try is Bumble and Bumble's Surf Spray ($19.99 folica.com).

Then pull sections away from your head and use the blow dryer underneath.

This will create lasting volume that doesn't look pageant-y.

unil infrashine ceramic flat iron

My flat iron collection has slowly evolved over the years. I started off with a cheap generic flat iron, because frankly I didn't really care. I hadn't straightened my hair before, but they were becoming popular so I bought one. It was horrible. It pulled hair out every time I used it which in turn created more use for the flat iron with all of these frizzy hairs growing back in. So, that lead to me abandoning the straight look for a year or two. I would still use it every once in a while when I was having a really bad hair day.

Finally, I couldn't take it anymore and my husband got me a new one for Christmas a couple years ago and it was probably around $50 - Conair. Much better, but still required me to go over my hair several times and my hair is not difficult or thick. During this time I jumped on the Posh Spice bandwagon and got her infamous haircut which definitely requires a flat iron, but since I already had straight hair, if I dried it correctly I rarely had to use a flat iron.

And now, I use one almost everyday because after I had grown tired of Posh, I joined Katie Holmes and the millions of other women who got bangs. And about 30 seconds after I got them I decided I needed to grow them back out immediately. So now that my hair has gotten a little bit longer and the bangs are becoming less bangy (is that word?) I need my flat iron more. And for the past 2 weeks I have been using the 1" UNIL Infrashine Ceramic Flat Iron.

Now I know how a flat iron is suppose to perform. I love, love this flat iron. It glides through my hair so smoothly and leaves it super shiny. And the results last. The weather in the DC area kills me and my hair and this makes my life a little easier.

As I have mentioned before, I have straight hair and for about 95% of my hair that is a true statement. The other 5% is rather interesting. Right around my hair line, even with my temples on both sides of my face, there is about a inch or 2 of hair that grows in a ringlet if my hair is long enough. If it's not long enough it grows straight out from head like wings. Very, very cute....if I was 5.

And my other quirk, if you will, is that the left side of my hair likes to flip under and the right side of my hair to likes to flip out....if it's long enough. And guess what? Both great looks are reaching peak length. And my new best friend gently reminds them with only a couple swipes through the hair to behave themselves. Even Jennifer asked if I was doing something different with my hair. Seriously this thing is awesome.

Here are the details on the flat iron. It has 5 different heat settings from 170-400 degrees. I haven't set it to 400. I think my hair is too fine for that much heat. It has a light to indicate when it has reached the set temperature...it blinks. This is a great feature. I was always guessing with my other one. And it has a 9ft swivel cord. This may not be important to everyone. But when you have a husband, a son, a dog and cat in all in your bathroom you will appreciate the fact that you can move around and still be doing your hair. It is around $130 but right now it is on sale for $104.99 with free shipping at misikko.com.

There is also another great posting on this flat iron over at mischo beauty.

lancome's summer 2008 color collection

This is just a few of the items being offered for Lancome's Summer 2008 makeup collection.

It's being called Cabana Bronze and brings to mind heiresses who lounge luxuriously by the pool, wearing stilettos and drinking Cristal.

I'm loving the bronze palette, as well as the Star Bronzer ($33) which is neatly stored inside the handle of it's own brush. Convenient for travel and those on-the-go touch ups.

The gorgeous eyeshadow compact, Color Design Cabana Bronze Compact ($43), comes in two different color sets...Cabana Sunrise and Cabana Sunset. Cabana Sunrise contains lively golden pinks and browns, while Cabana Sunset has the sultry golds and deep browns.

Divine.

Could you pass me the champagne dahling?

Head on over to lancome.com to purchase and for more information.

aveda control paste

If you are looking to de-pouf-a-fy your hair, this is the way to go.

Aveda's Control Paste ($22 at aveda.com) is a definite must for me. Especially when I'm trying to avoid that dreaded "newscaster" (hello-my-hair-has-been-shellacked-beyond-recognition) look.

It was also the only finishing product I reached for when my hair was pixie short...think Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby.

This provides a great light hold, with amazing definition. A fantastic way to obtain that piece-y look.

Here's a tip...if you want to add an extra POW!...take a small amount of the Control Paste in the palm of your hand. Add a drop of a serum, or gloss (try Aveda Brilliant Emollient Finishing Gloss - $23) and rub your palms together until both products are emulsified. Work it through your hair with your fingertips, taking care to select strands here and there for added definition.

Gorgeous and not a shellacked strand in sight.

I'm ready for my close-up.

P.S. Of course you don't have to take my word for it...check out some other reviews on this product at TotalBeauty.com.

max factor's colorgenius blush

If you get the Style Network, you might have caught a recent showing of one of my fave shows, Allure Backstage.

It's hosted by Daisy Fuentes (anyone remember her as an MTV VJ back in the day?) and Allure Magazine's Editor-in-Chief, Linda Wells.

Basically they give viewers backstage access to the best trends in makeup for the season.

The show is a beauty fanatics dream.

I was loving every minute and found myself calling out the name of each makeup artist that I recognised.

Yes...I do need to get out more.

But, come on, these guys are like rock stars to me.

Especially one that seemed to be present at almost half of the fashion shows that were featured...

Pat McGrath.

If you haven't heard of Pat McGrath, know this...she is phenomenal.

An absolute artist.

And I'm in love with her gorgeous British accent...it's seriously as adorable as she is.

Well ladies, I'm here to tell you that you can have a little Pat McGrath in your own homes.

No silly. She isn't making house calls. Although, that would be awesome wouldn't it?

Pat McGrath is the new Global Color Cosmetics Creative Design Director for Procter & Gamble. For her new role, she is now the beauty expert and creative force behind the New MAX Factor line.

One of the new products being offered is Max Factor's ColorGenius Blush ($12.72 drugstore.com). It's available in three colors...roses, peaches, and spices.

Each compact comes with three varying colors, from light to dark. They can be used individually for a soft and luminous glow, or combined for a more dramatic and intense look.

For a little fun, head over to maxfactor.com for a special section called Pat's VIP Tips. Here the makeup phenom shows you how to achieve different looks with products from the line...complete with a cheat sheet and step-by-step instructions.

There are also some other products that I am dying to try out, including their new Vivid Impact Eyeshadow Duos and Vivid Impact Highlighting Mascara.

I'll just have to add these, to my list of products that I must try soon.

pangea organics

Happy Earth Day everyone!!

In the spirit of Earth Day I thought I would finally review a product that I have been wanting to talk about for a couple weeks now and I thought it was appropriate given the brand is totally organic. I am talking about Pangea Organics.

I stumbled upon this brand at the Nordstrom Trend Show as Jennifer and I were making one last loop before we headed home. We each got a couple samples and spoke to the representative for a few minutes.

The samples were a shower gel (Canadian Pine with White Sage) and a body/hand lotion (French Chamomile with Sweet Orange & Lavender). I gave my husband the shower gel for 2 reasons - 1) he was all over it as soon as I showed it to him and 2) I had no desire to smell like pine and sage.

Now, a brief backdrop on the husband - a guy's guy. Rarely ventures outside of his comfort zone when it comes to his grooming routine. He's been using the same brand and scent of bar soap for as long as I have known him. Same goes for his face soap. I've tried to get him to use other products and he always finds some excuse to go back to his routine.

Well, he tried this shower gel and LOVED it. He loved the way it smelled in the shower and how he smelled afterwards. I have to admit he smelled good. It wasn't overpowering at all - a very nice woodsy smell. I don't think I would use it myself, but I think it's perfect for a guy. And the most amazing part - he wants more. I get to buy him different soap!! You have no idea how exciting this is for me. He's branching out....finally.

I tried the body/hand lotion. At first I thought the scent was way too strong, but after it soaked in, it left a really pretty light scent. I would definitely consider purchasing it.

Pangea, in addition to being 100% all natural ingredients, did brilliant packaging. After you are done with your lotion, shower gel or any of their other products, slip the label off and soak the box in water for a minute and then take it and plant it. There are organic seeds in the packaging. And the boxes are made using a Zero-Waste process so it doesn't impact the Earth anymore than it needs to.

There is a whole range of products available from Pangea. I have seen several positive reviews on their facial creams on totalbeauty.com. And I know their facial mask has been awarded several awards.

Pangea's website is worth a peak. It breaks down what is in each of their products and which skin types it is appropriate for. I would check their to see what would be good for me and then search other sites to find a good price.

I think the most expensive item is around $32 so it is very affordable. My darling husband's shower gel is $13 which isn't too crazy. And since it is Earth Day almost every site I have looked at has some sort of special deal for Pangea. On beautyhabit.com the entire line is 20% off for the entire month of April. According to Pangea's website it is also at a special price at most World Markets (I love this store). I just went to world market online and they have most of the line at a great price - the beloved shower gel is under $10. And you can find it at Nordstrom, although online it doesn't look like they carry the whole line.

So, once again, Happy Earth Day!

I'm off to get some new shower gel!!!

chanel teint innocence compact foundation

I am not a stranger to the compact foundation.

I have tried my share in the past and have had mixed results.

Some were too powdery, some too creamy, some too heavy, and some were just plain awful.

Until I tried this.

This is Chanel's Teint Innocence Compact Foundation ($55 nordstrom.com). It's a glorious find and one that I am loving more and more each day.

I happened to read about this in Allure magazine, as a recommended product by the new artistic director for Chanel Makeup, Peter Philips. This was one of the products that he recommends as a good transparent or semilight foundation.

After using this for the past two weeks, I couldn't agree more.

It's unique in that it has a creamy feel, but glides onto my face like silk. It provides a natural-glowy look that does not feel heavy at all...I literally feel as if I have nothing on my face.

While it is a little pricey, I really don't have to use that much product each time...especially when I use it with the Chanel Primer. (Instead of using the provided sponge applicator, I use my Chanel Foundation Brush ($38 nordstrom.com)...which I also love, love, love.)

And, you have to admit, it's hard to beat the luxury that is Chanel.

origins sunny disposition

With Earth Day being tomorrow, I wanted to feature a product from an eco and environmentally friendly company that we haven't talked about before...Origins.

This is their Sunny Disposition Liquid Bronzer ($19.50).

I love a liquid bronzer, because it is so incredibly easy to use.

Place a little of the bronzer on the back of your hand. Take your finger (or you can use a foundation brush) and pick up a tiny bit of the bronzer. Dab it onto those areas of your face where the sun would naturally hit...cheeks, nose, above the brow, and chin. Then blend, blend, blend. The effect you're going for is a natural sun kissed look. Start off with a little and then add more if necessary.

You can also apply this bronzer over or under your foundation.

Either will result in gorgeously glowing skin.

Speaking of gorgeous...let me share with you why I love Origins.

I remember when this company first hit the market.

Even back then, I loved their message and their organic approach to beauty.

Take a gander at what goes into their packaging...

Our cartons are made from 50% Forest Stewardship Council certified paperboard and 50% post-consumer recycled fiber. These paperboards and cartons are manufactured using wind power or hydro power, both renewable energy resources. In a given year, Origins uses approximately 192,000 lbs of this paper in place of virgin fiber. In doing so, we preserve 922 trees for the future, save 391,740 gallons of wastewater flow, and conserve 653,245,400 BTUs of energy. And we prevent 84,398 lbs of net greenhouse gases.

And that's just what goes into making the cartons that store the makeup.

Amazing.

So, not only will their products make you beautiful, they are also doing their part to make the world a more beautiful place.

What's not to love?

clinique even better skin tone corrector

I love Clinique.

They are a great go-to line for skincare, that won't leave your bank account with a negative balance.

Take this product, for example.

This is Clinique's new Even Better Skin Tone Corrector ($39.50).

It's said to...

Virtually undo the visible evidence of sun damage, dark patches, skin stresses, age spots, even the darkening that follows acne scarring.

Apparently it can also...

Gently create—for all ethnicities—brightness and clarity you thought long gone.

Any product that could do this and do it for less than $50, has my name all over it.

Don't you just want to run out, right this second, and buy it?

this just in...getting the celeb eye look

This is enlightening for me.

I have always wondered how celebs get their eyes to look so wide open, even when they have major liner surrounding them.

Now I know.

Tight lining.

According to the May issue of Glamour, this is how the makeup artists to the stars get their client's eyes to pop.

In case you are like me and you have no idea what tight lining is, let me explain.

Tight lining is when you push back your top lid and apply liquid eyeliner inside the lash line. You will then line above your lashes as usual and then repeat the same process on your bottom lid.

Glamour suggests finishing off with a horizontal "V" of metallic liner at the inner corner of each eye (try Laura Mercier Limited-Edition Brilliant Eye Liner $22).

I don't know about you, but I like being able to actually see step-by-step instructions on how to achieve this look. For that, I'm sending you over to Tink's Carnival Gloss blog. It's a great blog that delivers an awesome tutorial on how to perfect tight lining.

So good luck my darlings and let me know how it goes!

bobbi brown get personal custom palette

OK...this is major.

I had seen this recently, in my fave mag Lucky, and didn't think this was going to be available so soon...in the blurb they said that only certain stores had this.

But, here it is.

While cruising the Neiman Marcus website, I came across this.

What is this you ask?

This is Bobbi Brown's new Get Personal Custom Palette. For just $10 you buy a blank palette, with either space for three or four colors, and customize it with eye and/or cheek colors (for $20 and $22 each).

Genius!

And is it going to be too much if I tell you that she has about a million colors to choose from? She has graciously offered up a slew of new colors, for us die-hard fans to drool over.

Even...wait for it...shimmer blushes!

This offer is currently online at the Neiman Marcus site. I haven't had a chance to check with my SA at the store, but I will call tomorrow and see if they have them available there as well.

Once I get the scoop, I'll let you know!

Jennifer

Update: From what I could tell, the palette system is available at select Bobbi Brown counters. Call your nearest one to see if it's available there.

we've been tagged!

The adorable Tink over at Casual Lavish has tagged Christine and myself.

Here are the rules:

1. Link the person who tagged you. 2. Mention the rules in your blog. 3. Tell about 6 unspectacular quirks of yours. 4. Tag 6 random bloggers by linking them at the end of your post. 5. Leave a comment on each of the tagged blogger's blogs letting them know they've been tagged. 6. Once your post is up, notify the person who tagged you.

Here are Christine's 6 Unspectacular Quirks:

1. I am still afraid of the dark...sometimes. It freaks me out if I have to get up in the middle of the night for something. I will usually wake my husband up and make him go see whatever it is.

2. I can't leave the house without taking a shower first, regardless of where I am going. Even to the pool or beach - I use the excuse that I have to shave my legs.

3. You would be shocked to see how many flip-flops I own. Very bad habit of mine. I buy them year round.

4. I love to cook and bake - great stress reducer for me.

5. My husband and I say 'I love you' at the end of every phone call, every night before we fall asleep and a couple times throughout the day when he's home from work.

6. I chew gum all day long but only if I am out of the house. I rarely chew it when I'm home.

Here are mine:

1. I can't stand balloons. This one is really hard because my two year old loves them. I really hate when kids squeeze them and you are just waiting for the inevitable POP! It really, really freaks me out.

2. I will quote random dialog from movies and/or tv shows at any time. My husband and I share this quirk. It's hilarious to us...confusing for others who don't get it.

3. I am anal about taking care of my handbag collection. I have handbags that Big L has given me over the years. Louis, Guccis, and some others. Bags that I received years ago, still look brand new. I have them protected in neat rows on a shelf in my closet. I even make it a habit to give one a break after it's been used for a few weeks and switch it out for another. I know...I really need to get out once in a while.

4. I am fanatical about using moisturizers. I won't set foot out of my house unless I have a moisturizer on with some sort of sunscreen. I also am fanatical about using eye creme. I always put that on morning and night as well. Always.

That leads to this one...

5. I will always wash my makeup off at night. Always. I could probably count on one hand the number of times that I have not done this. No matter how tired I am, I will always do this. I have literally been exhausted, crawled into bed, felt guilty about not washing my face, gotten up, and washed it. Crazy right?

6. Rest assured...if you invite me over to your house and I excuse myself to use your bathroom, know this...I will check out your medicine cabinet. Every time. Don't worry, I won't touch or take anything. My nosiness just takes over and I have to look. Sorry.

OK...that's it. Those are our quirks. Well, now we have the matter of tagging six others. So here goes:

Mischo Beauty
Daily Dose of Coffee
The Jet Set Girls
Beauty Girl Musings
Beauty 411
Fifty-Cent Head

Can't wait to see what you ladies come up with!

makeup brushes part deux

As promised, I'm delivering to you some great inexpensive makeup brushes.

First, I'd like to give you some tips on amassing your own brush collection with some mid-tier makeup brushes.

The first tip is to start off small.

Figure out which essential brushes you need and purchase those first.

For me, it would be a foundation brush, a blush brush, a flat eyeliner brush, and a larger eyeshadow brush.

Each could easily pull double duty if necessary and QTips, or my fingers, work great in a pinch.

My second tip is, if you really are only needing this many yourself, you might want to consider investing in some really good quality brushes. You don't have to spend an arm and a leg, because there are some really great mid-price brushes that fit the bill. If you purchase one or two at a time, the blow won't come as quickly to your wallet...that's how I purchased mine. Over time, these brushes will still be around...making the money spent an investment.

One such line is Sephora Professional Makeup Brushes. They have some really great mid-price brushes, many for under $25. Other ones to try are the department store cosmetic lines...such as Clinique, Benefit, Prescriptives, and Fashion Fair. Both Sephora and Prescriptives even make a dupe of the MAC skunk brush for $35 and $32 respectfully*.

Another mid-tier brush company is Japonesque. They are offering a brush kit (seen above) for $70 on nordstrom.com. That may seem like a lot, but you are getting five brushes and a gorgeous case to keep them in. Japonesque is a brand that I have used and been pleased with in the past. They make a quality product for not a great deal of money.

Third and final tip...try to pick up your brushes during a beauty event and at least you'll get a little more for the money. Many times companies offer brush sets for a limited time only, as well. Check department store websites, cosmetic counters, and the individual cosmetic company websites for their scheduled events and limited edition offers.

Well, that's it for today.

So that I'm not teasing you anymore, next week we will have our third and final part to end our makeup brush series....drugstore finds.

See you then!

sally hansen comfort shine lip glaze

I have I confession to make...I'm a lip gloss addict.

It's true. I seriously have a problem.

If you were to take a look inside my makeup bag right now, you'd find an assortment of glosses...about ten.

And that's just my handbag.

My drawer at home holds about ten or more as well.

I try and stop. Really I do. Mainly because it is an expensive habit...each gloss is between fifteen and twenty bucks a pop.

If Big L knew how much money I have spent in lippies alone, he'd be on the phone to our lawyer in a heartbeat.

At least with this Sally Hansen Comfort Shine Lip Glaze ($5.99 at walgreens.com), I won't be breaking the bank.

It's made Elle magazine's It List for it's ability to deliver a highly moisturizing gloss with a hint of berry flavor.

After one look at the description on the Sally Hanson site, I already have one foot out the door.

This gloss is said to provide instant relief to chapped lips through something called a Vita Fruit Complex. It also contains antioxidants and other multi-vitamins, all to make your lips soft and kissable.

Look for a review on this soon...just don't tell Big L.

essie nail polish

You are looking at 2 of my favorite colors from Essie.

I tend to use these more in the Spring and Summer and also for special days like weddings.

And yes I know they are very similar in color, but they are just different enough to add a little variety.

The one on the left is Ballet Slipper and the one on the right is Sugar Daddy. Both colors are very light and sheer, even after a couple coats. But they both add a nice touch of color. I actually have Sugar Daddy on as we speak. I just got back from a week in Philadelphia, we had a wedding to attend. (Plus, I really like saying Sugar Daddy, so we'll see how many times I can get that in this posting.)

I really like Essie nail polish. It stays on a really long time and there is a huge range of colors to choose from. I put on my Sugar Daddy on Friday and it has lasted through playing with my 2 year old son in the yard for 4 days (and footballs, soccer balls and digging in the dirt were involved), rehearsal dinner, wedding, brunch and grocery shopping. It is just now starting to chip on the edges of my nails.

I have another gem from Essie that I use every time I paint my nails regardless of brand of polish. It is Essie's 3-Way Glaze, which is a base coat, top coat and nail hardener all in one. I think this really helps keep the polish around a few extra days. I can't find it on essie.com but I got mine from hello-gorgeous.net. And this website is a secret I am sharing with you.

They have almost every Essie color and they are always on sale. The 3-Way Glaze is normally $7 and they sell it for $5.25. My Ballet Slipper is $4.99, as is my Sugar Daddy (normally $7). And to top that off, the site offers flat rate shipping of just $4.95. The site also carries OPI and Lippmann and a couple other polish brands and a variety of other beauty related products. Hello Gorgeous is definitely worth a look.

Alright, back to Essie... I was just on essie.com and they have a section for discontinued colors that you can buy - if they still have them in stock. So, if you have any favorite Essie colors that are hard to find, I would take a look on there. They also offer up suggestions for mixing Essie colors and what the color looks like when you mix specific colors together. Fun to look at when you have some time to kill.

Umm...Sugar Daddy. (I had to get one more in)

chanel base lumiere illuminating makeup base

I always thought that the use of a primer was an unnecessary step.

Just something else that the SA would show you, to get you to spend more money.

After all, I already use a good enough moisturizer... why add something else on top of that and then add another layer on top of that too?

Besides...they never do what they say.

Right?

Wrong.

This is Chanel Base Lumiere Illuminating Makeup Base ($40)...and it is fast becoming my favorite product.

When I combine this with my foundation, it provides a gorgeous natural finish that lasts until I take it off.

Seriously...it's that good.

I was checking this out at the Chanel counter in the Neiman Marcus at the Tysons Galleria, when Shamila* (the uber-friendly MUA for the line) sat me down to try it out. She applied it to one side of my face with a foundation brush and let me see the results with a mirror.

Wow.

It wasn't a miraculous transformation, but a subtle difference that surprised me. It was like someone came along, added a slight glow to my skin, and made the small imperfections vanish. Once she added the foundation...I was sold. Because of the primer, she only needed a touch of foundation on top. It smoothed on beautifully and lasted until I took it off that night.

You only need a pea sized amount to cover your face. I'll start with my regular moisturizer and eye cream, let that work it's way in and then add the primer on top with a foundation brush. I apply this all over the face and even under the eyes. Then I add my foundation on top, with a foundation brush as well...especially under the eyes. I finish it all off with blush, a dabbing of my YSL Touche Eclat and I'm done.

A natural perfection that lasts throughout the day.

Jennifer

*If you ever find yourself at the Neiman Marcus in Tysons Galleria, do yourself a favor...head over to the Chanel counter and ask for Shamila. She's super sweet and super helpful and she'll load you up with samples. I didn't even mention what I do and she still treated me like I was her most important client...a big plus in my book.

yves saint laurent touche eclat

I adore this product.

In case you aren't yet aquainted, let me introduce you to your new best friend...the YSL Touche Eclat ($40 at nordstrom.com).

This awesome invention is on my list of HG products.

When Christine and I attended the Spring Beauty Trends show at Nordstrom, this product probably received the most accolades.

I love applying it after my foundation, under my eyes in the area closest to my nose. This helps to diminish the darkness under my eyes. I also use it in the area outside my lower nose, to counteract the darkness and slight discoloration there as well.

The NMUA for Yves Saint Laurent, clued us in on other ways to use it. In addition to the two uses above, he uses it under the brow (to lift the eye area), above the brow (again to lift that area), on top of the cheek bones, above the cupids bow of the lips, and under the nose. Wow!

Plus, you can't beat the handiness of a pen-shaped applicator with a brush so cleverly attached. A cap that stays put and a the handy clicker at the bottom that allows you to control how much product you use.

Genius.

jemma kidd rosy glow: lip and cheek tint

I love anything that comes in a roll-on applicator...

Perfume, deodorant, and those fun little roll-on lip glosses I used to buy at the local Woolworth back in the day.

For that reason alone, this product intrigues me.

This nifty little gem, is the Jemma Kidd Rosy Glow: Lip and Cheek Tint ($37.50). It's described as an ultra-natural sheer tint that will provide a fresh-faced flush of color.

Which is exactly what you'd want a product like this to do.

The two reasons why I like it even more, is because the word stain appears nowhere in the description and there isn't a scary nail-polish-brush-type applicator to freak me out.

Just a roll-on...to provide my cheeks and lips with a sheer tint of rosy goodness.

clinique m protect spf 21

My husband could care less about skincare.

He uses any soap that's in the shower to wash his face and has even used body lotion as a moisturizer.

I was the one who introduced him to skincare.

Well, skincare in the form of facial moisturizers.

He's actually tried several. Some drugstore brands, some department store....but none have been as effective as this one.

This is called M Protect by Clinique ($21.50). It has an SPF 21 and comes in an easy to use 3.4 oz tube.

I had picked this up from Nordstrom about three weeks ago and quietly slipped it into his side of the medicine cabinet....knowing that he would get the hint and start using it.

Then, I completely forgot to check up on him to make sure that he was using it.

That is, until I happened to notice how nice his skin looked one day last week. His skin tone actually looked even. A big deal for him because his sensitive skin tends to get red in places. I would even say that his face looked kinda glowy...and this was at the end of one of his long work days.

When I told him that his skin really looked good, he kind of looked at me like I was crazy. Well, his actual comment was...thanks, I just had some work done. Then he reminded me that he had been using the cream that I bought him. Proud, I said so you like the cream huh? He shrugged and replied yeah...it's not so bad and walked away.

Which, believe me, is my husband's way of saying that he loves it.

beauty buys under $10 - aquaphor

You are looking at one of the most versatile beauty buys under $10.

I can't tell you how many times I have picked up a magazine and read about the many makeup artists who use this.

I also can't express to you enough, how many different ways I use it in my household.

The most basic way I use it, is as a lip balm. While I still have a makeup bag filled with various balms, it's an addiction...forgive me, I will always reach for this when my lips are at their most chapped. It heals them...every time. (Quick tip for smooth lips - In the shower, take a wet soft nubby washcloth and massage it over your lips in little circles. Once you are out of the shower dry them off and apply this balm...perfection.)

Another way, is to soothe Little L's diaper rashes. Every so often, Little L will suffer from some redness in his tushy region...this helps to ease the pain and take away the nastiness. Thus making a happier Little L. (Note - for severe cases of diaper rash, you should take your little ones to a doctor...especially if it doesn't go away in a day or so)

Yet another, is even more helpful.

When I get into the mood to go for a run (not often lately, but I will be heading out there in the warmer weather) I apply this balm to the tops of my toes and the backs of my ankles (where the shoe would rub) this cuts down on friction and I don't end up with blisters. If I'm wearing shorts, I'll apply a little of this balm to the inner thigh area. This also cuts down on friction and doesn't leave them red and sore.

Believe it or not, there are even more ways that people use this wonder balm. There is even a website (I kid you not) that gives you many other uses for this stuff. If you're curious and want to check it out, it's aquaphoruses.com.

Any pharmacy, Walmart, or Target carries Aquaphor. They have many different sizes to choose from. In addition to the tub above (which is $7.69 for 3.5 oz) they also carry tubes ($5.69 for 1.75 oz), and a ginormous tub ($14.99 for 14 oz). The huge tub actually says that it's their Baby Healing ointment, but it appears to be the same stuff to me. I found all of these prices at drugstore.com in their Aquaphor Store.

makeup brushes part one

This is my collection of makeup brushes.

I have had many of these brushes for over ten years.

The majority of my brushes are Bobbi Brown or Mac. There is one Chanel, one Laura Mercier, and a couple of drugstore brands in there.

I can honestly say that I probably only use three or four of these on any given day.

The ones that get the most rotation are my foundation brushes and my blush brush. For blush I'll use my MAC Skunk Brush, or my Bobbi Brown depending on my mood.

Now, no one needs this many brushes.

If I was being honest with myself, I could really pare down this stash. Especially when it comes to the eye brush department.

Right now this is how that group stands...

While I love all of them and could find a way to use all of them, I could really get by with these two brushes.

The bigger one is great for applying all over color, applying color to the crease and a smudging of powder along the upper lid. The smaller is my flat tip eyeliner brush. The flat tip (or a slant tip...have one of them too) is excellent for lining the eye with any type of formula.

For smudging, while I do have an inexpensive brush that I bought for that, I could easily get by using a QTip or my finger in a pinch.

If you really wanted to add another to this pair, you might want to add a brush for the crease. These three here are all used for applying shadow there. The one to the far left can serve double duty as a crease brush and a smudger.

Whew...that was a lot of photography and information to share! I hope I helped some of you out. Next week, we will have part two. This will help you find some great brushes that won't cost you an arm and a leg.

Until then...goodnight my darlings.

chanel's collection for summer 2008

I'm loving the colors for the Summer 2008 collection.

No doubt inspired by the desert, the colors take you on a virtual journey through the Sahara.

I'm loving the eyeshadow quad, each iridescent shadow is shaped like a pyramid. They can be used on their own, or combined to sheer perfection on your eyelids.

If you have never purchased a Chanel cosmetic product, you should.

Not only are the colors gorgeous, they are also long lasting. Another thing is that each piece of Chanel makeup comes in its own little black velvet pouch.

How's that for luxury?

this just in...how to keep the smudgies away

At one time or another, it has happened to you.

You get the mascara smudgies.

In the morning, your mascara is perfect...really gorgeous and expertly applied.

Not a smudge in sight.

Then, later on....there they are.

Well, in the May issue of Glamour, they tell you how to keep your mascara from smudging...really.

The first tip is to finish off your lashes with a topcoat of waterproof mascara. This aids in helping the regular formula stay where you put it.

Another tip, is to not wear heavy eye cream during the daytime and to set your concealer with a dusting of powder. Not only will it help your concealer last longer, it will also assist in keeping the oiliness at bay.

It makes sense...oil = mascara migration.

The last tip is also good for keeping the germs away too...toss your mascara after five months. The more your mascara dries out, the more likely it will flake...everywhere.

Now go take care of the smudgies...you lash-a-rific diva you!

By the way, that mascara you see above is the Le 2 de Guerlain Two-Brush Mascara ($35). A great idea because it contains two differently sized brushes, each allowing you to reach all of your lashes. Try Sephora stores or Sephora online to purchase.

real life beauty...barbie and marisa

Welcome to a new feature here at Beauty in Real Life.

It's called Real Life Beauty and we will be featuring beautiful women of all ages.

Here we'll introduce you to the people that we meet in the real world. Women who we feel truly have that extra something.

You know what we mean right?

They are the women who you pass by and think, how does she get her hair to look that shiny?...what lipstick is she wearing?...and so on.

Take the gorgeous ladies above.

That is Barbie and her daughter Marisa. Yes, they are mother and daughter. Not sisters...as we're sure many a person has thought.

We found our first Real Life beauties at the Beauty Event, in the Nordstrom at Tysons Corner.

Marisa (the daughter) was the first one to catch our eyes.

We loved her style, as well as her tasteful and artfully applied makeup.

She's a teenager, but managed to combine both class and a casually hip style to her appearance. Something that we were never able to accomplish at her age, mind you.

We pulled her aside and asked if she wouldn't mind answering a couple of questions and would let us take her picture.

She graciously said yes and here are the results...

What is your favorite foundation? Maybelline Mousse Foundation
What is the one beauty item you could not do without? Mascara. Her fave is MAC Plush Lash.
What do you prefer to use on your lips? Chanel Glossimer in Glaze.
What are your favorite hair care brands? Frederic Fekkai, his straightening gel in particular.

While we were asking the questions her gorgeous mother, Barbie, came over to see what was going on.

She was adorable, and equally as classy and gracious as her daughter. She readily agreed to a picture and to answer a few questions...

What is your favorite foundation? Laura Mercier Moisturizing Foundation
What is your favorite mascara? Diorshow
What hair care products are your faves? Frederic Fekkai Glossing Cream and Sebastian products from the Laminates line.

We wish we had more time to chat with this fantastic pair, but we had already taken up a lot of their shopping time. We said goodbye, but not before Barbie told us a little something about her daughter.

She let us know that Marisa has been a Nordie's Girl, from the time she was little.

How great is that?

As we watched them leave, Christine and I both sighed. Each of us thinking the same thing...how cool it would have been to grow up a Nordie's Girl too.

With Love (Always),

christine's day at the nordstrom spring trend show

Let me start off by saying how much fun this show was. It started off with a little fashion show highlighting the new Spring trends in fashion and makeup. Once it was over we moved upstairs to all of the makeup counters, where it was every woman for herself. Pure chaos. It made my head spin, but oh, so much fun.

As if all of this wasn't enough, you also got an appointment for a free makeover. I chose Bobbi Brown because, well, I just can't get enough of her lately and I am loving her new colors and really wanted to try them out.

I asked for a look that worked for day and could easily go into night. Lindsay (the makeup artist for Bobbi Brown at Nordstroms in Tyson's) told me that she was going to put on all of my makeup and then have Lisa (the professional and according to Lindsay, Bobbi's right hand woman) come over and do my eyes. I was crying on the inside - not the outside that would ruin the makeup. I couldn't wait to hear what Lisa had in store for me. Most of the makeup Lindsay put on me I already had (foundation, concealer, corrector, powder, and blush) but I didn't mind that at all. I was more excited to see what Lisa would do with my eyes and lips.

So, Lisa came over and I told her the look I was going for. I ended up with a very pretty subtle daytime look that could easily transform into a evening look by changing the eyeliner and adding some gloss on top of the lip color.

Here are the details:
For my eyes she used the new Long Wear Creme Shadows in Navajo (base color that is a creamy pinkish white) and then Cement (grey beige) on top. I had 2 choices when it came to the Long Wear Gel Eyeliner - I could pick the daytime color in Sepia or the evening color in Cobalt Blue. I chose to live on the edge and went with the cobalt. The look was very dramatic and would totally work at night - not so much during the day under florescent lights in the middle of the mall - but definitely at night.

For my lips she chose the Creamy Lip Color in Rose Petal (shimmering neutral rose) and to take that into the evening look, she put the Brightening Gloss in Pink Lilac on top (pictured right in pink). I guess the brightening gloss makes lips seem fuller and adds a ton of shine.

Overall, I really liked the look they did for me. I ended up purchasing the 2 Creme Shadows ($22 each) and the Creme Shadow Brush ($25). I am not quite ready for the boldness of the gel eyeliner - it scares me. Plus, that stuff stays on like crazy, which is good but it takes some hard labor to get it off. I did not get any of the lip colors. You all know I am not a lipstick girl and I have more than enough glosses for now.

When I got home and saw my husband, I showed him all the stuff I got and he asked if I bought the blue eyeliner. I said no and he replied with "well out of all of this stuff you bought you should have gotten that." Go figure...so today I went and bought the powder eyeshadow in Navy ($19) to use as an eyeliner. I'll work my way up to the gel eyeliner.

clinique black honey almost lipstick

I confess to being a total lip gloss junkie. I have them everywhere - handbags, bathroom, nightstand, car - I even have them stashed in the kitchen.

Lipstick, on the other hand, not so much. I think I own 2 lipsticks, and that is only because they came with something else. I didn't even wear lipstick for my wedding - it was lip liner and gloss.

I have heard about Clinique's Black Honey Almost Lipstick for years now and I have wanted to try it. But I always forget about it until I read some new article on it, think about it for a second and then forget about it again. It's a vicious cycle. I think subconsciously I am afraid because it has the word "lipstick" in the name.

Clinique's description of the Almost Lipstick is that it's not quite lipstick, not quite lip gloss but works like a little of each. And the thing with the Black Honey shade is that it is suppose to be fairly universally flattering.

So, what finally got me to go to the Clinique counter and spend $14?

My mom (she'll be so happy I mentioned her again). She told me last week she went and got it and loved it and that I either needed to get it myself or try hers and then go get it. So, I just went and got it.

My first impression when I opened the tube, was that it was the darkest color of anything I have ever owned and there is no way this was going to go well. But it goes on so sheer and light, you never would have guessed. It is not sticky at all and the color is very pretty and flattering.

I have used it almost everyday since I bought it. I had brief freak out on Saturday when I thought I had lost it already, so it must be of some value to me (later that day I found it in my car).

My only complaint is that it does not last very long...at all. I feel like I have to reapply it way more than any other of my lip glosses. But I don't know if that is because it is 'almost lipstick' and I am not very familiar with lipstick or if the product just doesn't last very long. I am thinking about trying to layer it with something else and see if that helps it stick around a little longer.

Either way I am more than happy to reapply it as often as I need to.

aveda's light the way candle

I love stepping into an Aveda store.

It always smells divine.

They always have some candle burning that just makes me want to crawl into some corner of the store, cuddle up with my favorite blanket, and drift off to sleep.

This candle here is no exception.

In honor of Earth Month, Aveda partnered with the Global Greengrants Fund to create this deliciously scented candle.

Even better than the aroma, by the way, is the fact that 100% of the proceeds will be given to the Global Greengrants Fund, to protect clean air and water around the world.

100%

How great is that?

That means that, when you head into the Aveda store, and you plunk down your $10 for this candle...all of that money will go to the GGF. All of it.

The fact that it smells great, comes in a 95% post-consumer recycled and reusable container, and has a 16-18 hour burn time, is the icing on the cake.

They even went the extra mile to use organic essential oils and certified organic lavender from Bulgaria.

Somebody needs to give Aveda a medal or something...really.

Head to your nearest Aveda salon, spa, or store to purchase. Go to the Aveda website for locations and more information.

kiehl's superbly restorative body lotion

I love the name of this product.

It just gets to the point and makes you want to buy it.

I haven't had the opportunity to try out this product yet, but based on the name and it's product description...I will...soon.

Just take a gander at the product description from Neiman Marcus online:

Restores softness and tonicity for radiant, healthy looking skin
• Blended with fairly-traded, organic Moroccan Argan Oil.
• Restores softness for radiant, healthy-looking skin.
• Enriched with tocopherols, Argan Leaf Extract, and other antioxidants to protect against free-radical damage.
• Strengthens and protects skin's resilience.
• Scented with essential oils of Orange and Eucalyptus.

Well...I have absolutely no idea what the heck tocopherols are, but if they are going to protect me from some free-radicals...bring it on. I'm also intrigued at the prospect of strengthening and protecting my skin's resilience. Believe me, it needs all the help it can get. The radiant healthy skin part...well that's a no-brainer...who wouldn't want that?

Besides this body lotion, it is also available in a body oil. I do love me some body oils, but I almost killed myself the last time I tried to use one in the shower while I was still damp. Big L found me half-in and half-out of the tub, with the shower curtain and rod on top of me...not one of my finer moments. If I get up the nerve to try out this one, I'll let you know.

As far as the pricing goes, it's a little up there...even for Kiehl's. The body lotion is only 6.8 oz and retails for $35. The oil is 4.2 oz and retails for $30.

Even though it's still a little steep, I'm still curious enough to try this out. Maybe I'll try and score some samples from the Kiehl's counter person or something. She's been pretty friendly and giving to me in the past, considering I probably put her son through college with my Creme de Corps purchases alone.

Oh well, that's it for today. I'm heading over to Christine's house, so that Little L and her Little M can have a playdate. She and I will spend the time watching the boys and noshing on goodies. Gossip will definitely be involved. I mean, what better way to spend a dreary, rainy day?

beauty buys under $10 - makeup brush cleanser

There is seriously nothing more disgusting than a dirty makeup brush.

It must be my anal tendencies, because I find myself washing all of my makeup brushes at least once a week.

I had a friend in college, whose house we would get ready in before a Saturday night of club hopping.

This girl was pretty. She was perfect in every way except one...her makeup brushes were nasty.

I mean really, really, nasty.

Not only were they nasty, they were also matted and smushed. I couldn't understand how she was able to use them at all.

I also couldn't understand how she let them get this way. I almost felt sorry for the brushes....they looked so sad.

I really should have staged a makeup brush cleaning intervention, but I don't think she would have responded well to this. I also don't think the brushes would have responded well to this either, they were too far gone.

I can help you out though.

My first suggestion would be to clean your brushes, at least once a week. For this once a week cleaning, I would use a gentle baby shampoo. It's great for the bristles of a makeup brush, and really provides a deep cleaning. I use Johnson's Baby Shampoo ($4.49 at drugstore.com). It's cheap and readily available and I always have some on hand to use for Little L's bath nights.

Just do yourself a favor and follow these tips for using the shampoo to clean your babies:

Squeeze a small amount of the shampoo into the palm of your hand and wipe the wet brush in your palm to pick up the shampoo. Gently massage the shampoo through the bristles, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Make sure you rinse your brushes on an angle, you should try to not get the wooden part of the brush wet. Pat your brush dry with a towel and reshape the bristles. Lay your brush on a counter edge to dry.

That's it. Plain and simple and easy to do.

I do like to use another product in between cleanings, especially if I use one makeup brush with different products.

My favorite in between cleaner is this one from MAC.

It's easy to use and great for getting your brushes clean if you aren't able to do a thorough cleaning.

To use this, you take a couple of tissues and lay them across the palm of your hand. Add a little bit of the cleaner to the tissues. In a sweeping motion, gently glide the brush back and forth across the tissues with the bristle grain until no traces of residue remain. Allow your brush to dry for 1-3 minutes and you're ready to go!

Sephora also makes these great towelettes for cleaning too. These Makeup Brush Cleansing Wipes ($9) are great because they have the cleaner already on them. Just pop them out and use them as you would the MAC cleaner. These are great for traveling.

OK...I think that about does it for now. I'm always on the lookout for more products, so I'm sure I'll be posting about some new cleansers in the future.

For now, you have no excuse. Pick yourself up from this computer, find your brushes and tell them you love them....well...OK...you don't have to go that far.

Just find your brushes and give them a good deep cleaning..

Believe me...you'll be glad you did.

john frieda weather works

So, I was going to write about something else today. But then I had to run out to Target for various things.

In the rain.

That turned into sleet.

My first thought as I was struggling to get my son into his car seat (I never seem to have a problem with it unless it's crappy weather).

Anywho, back to my first thought....it was 'there goes the hair'. Second thought was, 'why the struggle with the car seat only when it's raining?'

After I got home, I saw several commercials for the new John Frieda line of hair products, Weather Works Weather Proofing . It's three different products (shampoo, conditioner and style sealant creme), that when all used together are suppose to produce beautiful hair regardless of humidity, static, UV rays and wind due to some special Shielding Technology.

I have to admit I am a fan of other products from John Frieda. I have used their Sheer Blonde shampoo and conditioner on and off for years. And recently I have started adding a little of the Original Frizz Ease to my daily routine.

I am intrigued to know if this stuff really works. Especially after my fantastic look today of stick straight hair with a nice layer of frizz on top and not one ounce of volume.

Luckily, it's around $5.00 a bottle, depending on where you can find it, so, if I don't like it I'm not out too much money. I have no problem trying the shampoo and conditioner. The sealant creme makes me a little hesitant - really anything with the word "creme" makes me hesitant. According to John Frieda, it creates a weather-resistant barrier around hair fibers to seal in essential moisture and block out style-ruining weather...to smooth hair and maintain style, and it visibly seals split ends and provides a natural hold.

If anyone has tried this trio of products, I would love to know what you think of it. There aren't very many reviews out about it.

mac duo fibre face brush #187

You are looking at probably one of the most versatile and favorite brushes you could have in your collection.

This is the MAC Duo Fibre Face Brush #187 ($42)...well that's its official name anyway. Many lovingly refer to it as the skunk brush.

How versatile is it?

Well you could use it to apply any liquid, cream, or powder foundation. You could also use it to apply any cream or powder blush.

I've heard of many a makeup artist using this to buff the foundation after they've applied it, to give an airbrushed finish to the face.

If you have a highly pigmented blush, this will help to deliver a perfectly realistic application.

I've used mine for foundation application and blush application, using creamy and powdery formulas. I've also used it for bronzers as well.

How popular is it?

Head on over to the MUA Product Review Boards and check out the constant accolades it receives.

Check out some other Beauty Bloggers and this brush (or a reasonable facsimile) will top the list of their faves.

Do yourself a favor, the next time you are near a MAC counter or a MAC store, try out this brush. You won't be disappointed.

Or...if you are a fan of this brush already, leave a comment below.

lifebooker

We thought that we should mention this great online concierge service for Spa, Beauty, Health, and Salon appointments.

Called Lifebooker, it's apparently New York's only online service of this kind.

They are launching a featured product giveaway program starting today.

The concept is pretty neat actually. Their description is as follows:

The first featured product is Elizabeth Grant's Biocollasis™ Advanced Cellular Eye Cream (retail value is $80). It's described as a deep wrinkle intensive treatment for the eye area.

Starting today, when you book and honor any appointment in April, you will receive the eye cream free!

Although neither Christine or myself have actually had the opportunity to try this eye cream...we're all about receiving a freebie with our purchases.

So, head on over to Lifebooker for more details and to book your first appointment. By the way, Lifebooker only deals with Spas and Salons in the Manhattan area neighborhoods right now. So, if you live in the New York City area...or plan on visiting there this month...check them out!

and the winner is...

First of all, we would like to thank everyone who took the time to enter our first giveaway!

We were both surprised at the number of entries we received, as well as the kind comments many of you made.

Well, we randomly selected a winner...and her name is...

chanel inimitable mascara

I never thought that I could love a mascara...but, I do.

I find myself looking forward to applying this everyday. It goes on smoothly, without clumping, and lasts all day (with minimal smudging) until I take it off.

It defines my lashes, gives length, and provides that finishing touch to my eyes. So much so, that I can get away without wearing any eyeshadow.

I use the Noir Black, but it also comes in Noir Brun and Noir Indigo. You can find this at any department store that carries Chanel products, or try Nordstrom online.

this just in...healthy hair

For those of us that loathe the hair dryer...especially in the warmer months...this should be a treat.

Allow your hair to air-dry.

Apply mousse or sea-salt spray to fine hair, or smoothing cream or serum to waves and allow hair to air-dry.

This not only prevents heat damage, it also allows the hair's natural texture to be on display.

One serum we love is Biosilk ($16.99). It's lightweight and perfect for reducing frizz.
