christine's nail color of the week...china glaze rodeo diva collection

I haven't forgotten about my weekly post here at Beauty in Real Life. My nails desperately needed a week off to repair themselves from the cold weather. They all split like nobody's business. Also, my son, my husband and myself were all struck with some cold that would not leave. But I'm back to business.

This week I let my son pick out the color. He must have been on sensory overload from the crazy Holiday displays that have been up since before Halloween because he picked out not one but 2 colors from the China Glaze Rodeo Diva Collection Flannel Fixation....Red Stallion and Gussied Up Green and this is when he still had his cold so I felt obligated to put both colors on. I did one hand in each.

Now, one of my favorite blogs All Lacquered Up, first of all great pictures, but she also did all 6 colors from the collection. To view all of those, please click here. My take on the colors...the Red Stallion would probably not be my first choice for reds but the polishes do go on really really well. I did put 2 coats on with no top coat, but I barely needed the second coat. The Gussied Up Green surprised me, I was not expecting to like that one at all and I am seriously considering doing a full mani with it. And after seeing all 6 colors courtesy of All Lacquered Up, I can tell you I will be checking a couple of the other colors as well.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and is recovering from Black Friday!

the dove self-esteem fund

We don't think that there are many women who haven't felt low self-esteem at one point in their lives.

Even though we talk about beauty products here, the truth is nothing is going to make you feel that you are beautiful...that comes from within.

Sounds easy...but for many, it's hard to believe that you are truly gorgeous.

That's where Dove comes in.

The Dove Self-Esteem Fund recently commissioned Real Girls, Real Pressure: A National Report on the State of Self-Esteem, that reveals there is a self-esteem crisis in this country.

The majority of girls (a whopping seven in ten) feel they do not measure up in some way including their looks, performance in school and relationships.

Most disturbing is that girls with low self-esteem are engaging in harmful and destructive behavior that can leave a lasting imprint on their lives.

In response to the self-esteem crisis, Dove is launching its largest effort yet to bring self-esteem
programming to girls across the country and to encourage everyone to make a difference in the lives of girls. This new initiative is part of the Dove Self-Esteem Fund goal to reach 5 million girls globally by 2010 with self-esteem programming.

Here's a little clip on one of their workshops.

hourglass color link palette

This palette is perfection.

Hourglass Color Link Palette in Landscape ($75) combines just the right colors in one neat little sleek package.

Two blushers and six eye shadows can literally deliver you a million looks for day and night.

The hues?

Matte chocolate brown, matte black, a matte light beige, bronze shimmer, ivory shimmer, tan shimmer, a divine nude blush, and soft pink shimmer.

I'm telling you...gorgeous.

The shadows are rich, last incredibly long, and go on smoothly. The darker colors work fabulously wet or dry.

You can use the blushes on their own, or combine them as a bronzer-pop-of-color effect.

My favorite daytime look.

I use the pink blush on my apples for the gorgeous flush, then I apply the tan shimmer all over the eyelid and up to the brow bone. I then use the bronze shimmer to lightly line the eyes (upper eyelid only) and smudge a little. I finish with one coat of mascara and I'm done.

Easy.

You can find Hourglass cosmetics at hourglasscosmetics.com and sephora.com.

winter beauty tips - how-to create a spa-like experience at home

With winter almost upon us...our favorite makeup artist decided to stop by and offer up some of her winter beauty tips.

So without further ado, here's some tips from the fabulous Melissa Walsh...

As the nights draw in and the weather gets colder, there are a few beauty rituals I like to indulge in!

Set aside some time for yourself one evening and try these:

First of all, turn your bathroom into your sanctuary.

melissa's picks by beauty in real life

Start by lighting a candle - I'm loving Cannabis Santal by Fresh at the moment, smells warm and fuzzy and a bit like hot chocolate.

Next, get a warm fluffy robe and face towel and put them on the radiator to keep them warm.

Then tie your hair up and away from your face and clean off your makeup with a creamy cleanser (even oily skin as it removes makeup thoroughly).

Now get in the shower and scrub your whole body with a moisturizing body scrub, I'm a fan of Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish, and rinse off well.

Get out of the shower and run a bath using a good quality bath oil like the ones by Dr Hauschka. These dissolve completely in the water with no oily residue. I particularly like the Lemon Bath Oil, but there are 4 others in the range: Lavender, Spruce, Sage and Rosemary and all have different benefits.

Before you get in, massage a layer of Fresh Sugar Face Polish onto your skin gently for about a minute and then leave on while you relax in the bath - I usually read my latest copy of Allure magazine, but you can just relax by candlelight if you don't fancy reading - be careful not to drift off though!

Lie there for as long as you like, but I recommend at least 10 - 20 minutes so you can absorb the benefits of the bath oil into your skin. Rinse off the mask/scrub with the bath water (the Dr Hauschka bath oils are also a facial rinse) and slowly get out.

Put on your robe and gently pat your face dry. Now is the time, while your skin is still slightly damp, to slather on your favorite body moisturiser, but steer clear of any with self tan in them as the oils on your skin will interfere with the absorption and you'll end up streaky!

Put on your facial cream and eye cream now - I love the Janson Beckett line - and add a good lip moisturizer to put back what the cold air took out - Jouer Essential Lip Enhancer is great...available online at jouercosmetics.com or exclusively in Henri Bendel in New York - 1(800) HBENDEL (423-6335).

If you aren't falling asleep by now you must drink too much caffeine! Get an early night and you'll look great in the morning!

Wow! Thanks for the tips Melissa!

As always...you rock!

a typical morning with christine

I have to admit my "typical morning" routine changes frequently, but as soon as I find something that works I stick with it until I either find something even better or run out of whatever miracle I have found.

For the past 4 weeks the stars have been aligned I have finally found my perfect morning routine... as far as skincare goes. And I have decided to share it with you...after all, Thanksgiving is all about sharing what we are thankful for.

I start my morning off with Dermalogica's Ultra Calming Cleanser. This cleanser is perfect for my sensitive skin. It's gentle enough to use on your eyes to remove makeup and can also be tissued off if you are too sensitive to use water. It protects and soothes skin sensitized by pollution, temperature extremes, irritating cosmetic products, harsh detergents, chemical exposure, stress, poor diet or hormonal factors. Also contains Lavender, Echinacea and Raspberry extracts for their anti-inflammatory, calming and healing properties. Jenn and I both got face mapped by Dermalogica when we were at Fashion Week. I highly recommend having this done before purchasing their products so you can get what is right for you.

After the washing of the face, I apply Your Best Face Defend, which is for oil control. You apply this before anything else and let it dry. I stay oil-free all day...and I mean ALL day. It does a good job of absorbing excess oil throughout the day and your skin will look balanced and natural. An added benefit to the oil absorbers in Defend, is that they diffuse light and soften the look of fine lines. I absolutely love this stuff and I will be really sad when I run out of it because it will set me back $120 and to be completely honest, I rather spend $120 on clothes or shoes than skincare. But believe me when I say it is my life's mission right now to find a cheaper product that produces the same results.

Next up is my Sonya Dakar Pore Minimizer ($48). I put a light layer of this on just to minimize the bigger pores I have in certain sections of my face. This is part of the Clarifying Collection from Sonya Dakar and I use the whole collection but the other 2 components I use at night and that is for another day. It is actually very similar to the above mentioned YBF Defend. And I don't feel the need to use this every day but when I need a little extra help this is where I turn to.

This leads to my moisturizer. Here's where I change things up based on what my skin is doing that particular day. My day-to-day moisturizer when the weather is normal and all is balanced, I use Dermalogica's Barrier Repair.

It helps to soothe and help repair damage caused by environmental aggressions. Formulated with Dermalogica's exclusive Anti-Ozonate Complex to protect skin from reactive ozone. Oil of Evening Primrose and emollient silicones provide a velvety feel, while strengthening the skin's natural lipid barrier to resist future damage. Shea Butter, Vitamin C and Bisabolol protect skin from dehydration, free radicals and inflammation.

This is a water-less moisturizer that looks and feels more like a primer...it reminds me of the Smashbox primer in looks and texture. I really like this and can see my self purchasing this again. I have actually stopped using primer and my face looks and feels so soft and smooth and my makeup stays all day.

Now, when the weather is colder and my skin starts to feel like it's cracking in a million different pieces I reach for Clinique's new Comfort on Call, which is ideal for dry, cracked, easily irritated skins and those bothered by wind and extreme cold. Appropriate for people with eczema or sensitive skin.

I have been putting on the Barrier Repair and then after is sets in, wherever I still feel the cracking feeling I apply this. And a brief note, this cream is thick, I mean take the lid off and toss it around the room and nothing will come out thick. So, a little goes a long way. I have been using any excess on my hands and cuticles. I have been reaching for this a lot lately since it has been so ridiculously cold outside and it barely looks like I have used anything.

Finally, the eye cream. Before it was cold I was using Clinique's All About Eyes. Now that it is painfully cold out, I have been using Clinique's All About Eyes Rich, it provides a little extra oomph to the under eye area. Once the weather reverts back in the spring I will probably go back to the regular All About Eyes.

That's it! I never in a million years thought I would be using so many products, I tend to take the less is more approach when it comes to most things, but if it works, it works. Next up, my typical makeup and night-time routines!

celebrate the holidays with nuvo sparkling liqueur

Nuvo Sparkling Liqueur ($30 for 750ml bottle) comes packaged in one of the most beautiful bottles that we've ever seen.

Adorable little flowers encircle the top and the pink effervescent liqueur inside are just so sweet.

Nuvo is a sparkling liqueur made with vodka and a small amount of delicate French sparkling wine, chardonnay with a touch of pinot noir.

It’s then blended with natural fruit nectar and infused with raspberry, peach and strawberry fruits to reveal a refreshing little zing that wakes up your tastebuds.

You can serve it chilled over ice in a champagne flute (it really tastes great like this), or for a festive Holiday treat, try a new recipe created by esteemed event planner, David Tutera.

Serve Nuvo Sparkling Liqueur over ice with a splash of Prosecco. Rim the glass with pink sugar or garnish with a sliced strawberry.

Easy.

Here's another...no one can resist a great Cosmo.

NUVO Sparkling Cosmo

* Fill a shaker with 2 ounces of chilled NUVO
* Add ½ ounce of Grand Marnier
* Add ½ ounce of Rose’s Lime Juice
* Stir, do not shake, and pour into a martini glass
* Garnish with a lime

And here's one that just sounds to die for...

NUVO Egg Cream (created by Tara Wright, the lead bartender at New York’s legendary 21 Club)

* Fill a large wine glass with ice
* Add 1 ounce of Frangelico (the nuttiness is a perfect compliment to the fruit flavors of NUVO)
* Add 1 ounce heavy cream
* Fill the glass with chilled NUVO and stir
* Garnish with a strawberry

Perfect for your next holiday gathering or shindig.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

laura geller dream creams lip palette

Lippie palettes always have my attention immediately.

It might be the sheer ease of it all...the fact that I'm given a few different colors to choose from and play with.

It might be the fact that with those colors you have then endless possibilities for new combinations.

Or it just might be the fact that you're getting a lot of stuff for a great deal.

Laura Geller Dream Creams Lip Palette ($25) is all that and more.

Four gorgeous creamy metallics in your choice of Apricot Berry or Berry, combines the coverage of a lipstick with the comfort and shine of a gloss.

I tried out the Apricot Berry and loved how they all-at-once complimented my skin tone and felt glorious on.

The added bonus?

A mini mirror inside the compact and a retractable lip brush to use even when your palette runs out...which might be never because you get a lot of product.

The only downside?

This won't be available till this winter.

Until then, check out other fabulous Laura Gellar products at qvc.com, sephora.com, and beauty.com.

get in shape with hoopnotica

This is something that you're definitely going to want to try.

Especially after stuffing your tummy full of turkey and sweet potato casserole.

Yum...while eating, but ugh after.

At least when you're struggling with the zipper on your jeans the next day.

It's normally after holiday feasting that I decide to incorporate a new exercise routine into my day.

We recently had the opportunity to check out the new craze Hoopnotica ($50 for a starter kit) and I gave it a test run.

It combines hula hooping and exercise...making it one of those I'm-burning-calories-but-having-fun kinda things.

Way more fun than jumping on a treadmill and walking/running nowhere.

Plus you can burn as many calories doing Hoopnotica as you would running.

Not bad.

This is due in part to the moves and the ginormous hoop that you get in the kit...I mean this hoop is major and heavier than hoops you've used when you were a kid.

After doing one of the tapes I was literally tired after the first 10 minutes. Like tired tired. Like an I-gotta-sit-down-right-now tired.

I love that it's fun to do and you can certainly feel it working other muscles of your body...the core area being the most important.

Also perfect is the fact that the hoop can be broken down for travel. Now you have no reason why you're not working out on the road.

And I have no reason not to work out after gorging tomorrow.

They have a great starter kit that includes a TravelHoop, Hoopdance DVD, and hoop tote. The kit is available for $49.95 from hoopnotica.com.

Enjoy a little snippet of the DVD here...

cosmo's sexiest beauty secrets - the ultimate guide to looking gorgeous

Have you ever picked up a magazine and wanted to know every little secret on how they got their models to look like that?

Or at least be able to translate that into something that would work for you in the real world?

Cosmo's Sexiest Beauty Secrets ($20) actually hands out the best tips around to get you looking even more gorgeous than you already are.

Don't blush...you know it's true.

The book is literally chock full of tip after glorious tip.

Like...

* Fake the look of fuller lips by blending a thin line of liquid highlighter along your cupid's bow so the light will bounce off and play up this curvy area.

* Use the colors that work best for your eyes to really play them up. Green eyed godesses look best in plum or lavender shades...blue eyes look divine in chocolate, bronze and gold...brown eyed lovelies should try navy or violet.

* While indoors under florescent lights prevent your skin from looking sallow by using a bright rose blush.

And like a million more.

It's the perfect little gift for that budding beauty guru in your life, or just something to pick up for yourself.

You should be able to find it wherever books are sold.

how-to achieve the totally gorgeous look of taylor swift at the ama's

Totally loving the easy-glam look that these ladies sported at the American Music Awards.

Girlactik Beauty’s founder, Galit Strugano shares how to achieve the subtle, smoky eye and glowing tints seen on celebrities such as Alicia Keys, Taylor Swift, and Ashley Tisdale.

Start by applying a pewter shadow like Girlactik’s Star Shadow in Vintage ($16), along the crease of your eyelid, apply a softer smoky color like Girlactik’s Star Shadow in Sultry ($16) on the lid itself, line eyes with a black eyeliner and smudge. (editor's note: you can always go over that line with one of the powder shadows to make it a little softer)

To get the fresh, rosy-cheeked look that really sets everything off, use Girlactik’s Star Blush in Bora Bora ($16), a coral pink color with golden undertones (editor's note: smile and apply it to your apples, then blend up and out). For that last touch, apply Girlactik’s Skin Glow Body Shine ($26) on décolletage, shoulders, and cheeks for a subtle glisten.

All products can be found at girlactik.com.

quick tip for softer hands from skyy hadley

With the temp as cold as its been, we're starting to agree that this winter might be a majorly frigid one.

Skyy Hadley, owner of As “U” Wish Nail Spa, has a great tip to make sure that we don't neglect our hands and tootsies during the chillier months.

Try using a petroleum-based product such as Aquaphor.

Products that are petroleum based counteract the drying effects on skin during cold temperatures, says Skyy.

For an at-home version of her special spa treatments, she suggests slathering one of these products on hands and feet, then covering them with a plastic baggy (use small for hands and large for feet).

Soak your know covered hands and feet in a comfortably moist hot towel for five minutes. The heat will help the moisturizer penetrate the skin.

Then, simply remove the baggies, wipe off the excess product, and massage the rest into your hands and feet for soft, smooth, supple skin.

Love the part about using a moist hot towel to make the product penetrate...honestly never thought to do that.

If you're in the NJ area, be sure to look up Skyy at the As "U" Wish Nail Spa. Head on over to asuwishnailspa.com for more details.

the holidays with lancome and a lancome nail color giveaway!

If Lancôme's holiday color collection, C'est Magnifique, isn't on your list of "must-haves" for the holidays, then it needs to at least be on your list for "awesome stocking stuffers".

We here at Beauty in Real Life have spent most of the week drooling over the entire collection, but we believe there is something in the collection for everyone you know.

For the Gothique Chic – she's the one who stood on line at midnight to see the premiere of Twilight and pre-ordered Aaron De Mey's black lip gloss Lancôme suggests Le Vernis Nail Polish in Midnight Glam or Artliner in Midnight Glam. Both are a dark navy blue shade that's right on trend for the holiday season! Christine might have to join the mad rush of holiday shoppers to get her hands on bottle of the Le Vernis Nail Polish in Midnight Glam.

For the Glamour Girl – she's the one who would rather leave the house naked than without her lipstick and nail polish on – Lancôme suggests Le Vernis Nail Polish in In All Her Splendor. It's a beautiful, classic red that's perfect for this festive season. Or one of the Color Design Eye Shadow Quads: Glamour Premiere creates a subtle, natural look while Hollywood Seductive creates a more intense, dramatic look. Pretty sure Jenn has her eye on the quads...maybe Santa will be good to her this year.

For Miss Fashionista – she's always the first to have the new issue of Vogue and submitted the winning bid for Lancôme's Behnaz lipstick on eBay – Lancôme suggests our holiday Juicy Tubes, which come with a special seasonal design and in an array of seasonal colors like
Pretty in Pink, Luminous in Lace and Showered in Diamonds. While neither one of us has the new Holiday Juicy Tubes, we here at BIRL are huge, HUGE fans of Juicy Tubes.

You can purchase this Collection anywhere
Lancôme is sold. Nordstrom has a huge promotion going right now where if you spend $36 you are qualified to purchase The Lancôme Holiday Beauty Box (valued at $400) for just $49.50. Crazy!!

As if all of that wasn't enough to get you over to your nearest Lancôme counter, we have one bottle of Lancôme's Le Vernis in Midnight Glam to giveaway!

To enter the giveaway, send us an email at beautyinreallifecontests@gmail.com with "Lancôme Giveaway" in the subject line. Be sure to include your full name and mailing address.

For me, it has to go on smooth, even my skin tone, last, yet still look natural.

Luminous Me
($49) delivers on all of those preferences.

It's light as air, but still makes my face look all glowy...a my-skin-only-better coverage.

What you can't tell in the picture, is that the container houses dual chambers...each with their own pump.

One contains the foundation, the other contains a fabulous primer.

Positively brilliant for travel.

You can basically choose which you'd like to use, foundation and primer or just foundation.

I actually liked the foundation both with and without the primer...though it did last longer with the primer underneath and I noticed that I would use a little less foundation when I did apply it first.

Essentially perfect either way.

With tools, eye shadow palettes, blush, bronzers, and lippies...you can totally round out your Me by Mezghan face.

Be sure to check out mebymezghan.com for more info on products and to purchase.

collection essentielle de chanel multi-use palette

Say the word Chanel and automatically you picture luxury goods at their finest.

Either one of us would literally die for one of their totally gorgeous tweed jackets.

Die.

While neither of us will probably be able to afford one of those puppies in this lifetime, we can dare to dream by purchasing their chic cosmetics.

For instance?

This Collection Essentielle De Chanel Multi-Use Makeup Palette ($85) provides everything you'd need for daytime or nighttime in one fabulous case.

Inspired by a romantic weekend in Paris, each palette creates uniquely different looks, perfect for any occasion, on either side of the Seine.

There are two gorgeous palettes to choose from...

Lumière Tendresse includes soft, muted colors that delicately highlight features for a fresh, sophisticated look.

Lumière Romantique includes warm, rich tones offset by vibrant roses for a new, modern take on natural.

Each includes four powder eye shadows, one powder blush, two cream lip colors and two lip glosses, plus a trio of Chanel brushes in travel form. Of course they also come in Chanel's signature velvet pouch to seal the deal.

Giving them that extra divine touch.

You can find the palettes at any Chanel counter and at chanel.com.

vera wang look

I am positively insane over this perfume.

It's the perfect scent for me, as if Vera Wang herself created it with me in mind.

Or maybe I'm feeling a tad narcissistic today.

On my skin, Vera Wang Look ($70 for 1.7 oz) has that fabulous, clean, I-just-got-out-of-the-shower smell that I adore in a fragrance.

And it lasts all day.

Here's a breakdown of all of the notes...

Top notes: mandarin and watery greens, layered with lush notes of lychee and golden delicious apple

Middle notes: a floral bouquet of lily, freesia and jasmine

Base notes: rich vanilla and skin musk, with touches of oakmoss and patchouli

Perfect for daytime, or whenever you want that perfect fresh and light scent on your skin.

A fabulous kick of scent that will have people asking you...what is that fragrance?

In a good way.

You can find Vera Wang Look at any department store that carries fine fragrances, or at verawangonweddings.com.

fall tips for entertaining on a budget with david tutera

Alright, the countdown is on.

This Thursday is Thanksgiving and it pretty much kicks off holiday party after holiday party.

Here are some quick, easy, and budget-friendly fall entertaining ideas from (sigh) David Tutera.

Enjoy.

Tip #1

A signature drink is a great way to save money and eliminates the need for a full bar.

Create a signature cocktail and you can even name it something fun and creative.

For a tasty cocktail that will add color to your event, serve Nuvo Sparkling Liqueur over ice with a splash of Prosecco. Create the perfect cocktail garnish in a instant using a maple leaf cookie cutter and round slices of apple or pear.

Tip #2

Pumpkins are a classic and inexpensive accent to any fall gathering. One creative way to incorporate them into your décor is to use miniature pumpkins as place cards at your table. Simply cut a slit across the top of the pumpkin and inserting the card.

Another idea could be to line the walkway to your party with jack-o’-lanterns instead of traditional votives or luminary bags.

If you really want to get fancy, impress your guests by serving your soup course out of hollowed-out gourds. You can also hollow out squash or miniature gourds to serve a first-course soup or even pumpkin ice cream or mousse for dessert!

Tip #3

Incorporate parts of the season into your fall floral arrangement. Non-traditional items such as lavender, feathers, berry branches, wheat, artichokes and eggplants all make beautiful additions to any fall centerpiece.

Artichokes are a wonderful harvest item that can be incorporated into the festivities in numerous ways. Set one at each place setting and tuck in a name card, or push back the inside leaves and nestle a taper candle inside. Use hot glue to secure for festive fall candle holders.

Tip #4

For festive fall placemats that won’t cost you a lot of money, cut paper or thin fabric to the desired size and use hot glue to secure colorful autumn leaves. Lay them side-by-side and let them overlap a little to create a lush autumnal cushion for your meal.

Create chic fall table décor on a budget by cutting out large pieces of felt in fall shapes like maple leaves, pumpkins or turkeys. Place them overlapping down the center of the table for a great table runner or set them down as festive trivets.

Great tips to make your gatherings a little more festive.

We have some great drink recipes to share and we'll be getting to those a little later this week!

Nuvo liqueur can be found at liquor stores nationwide.

new nars multiple duos and new multiple bronzers

Why does NARS love to torture us so.

Really...why?

Soon after releasing their to die for Orgasm/South Beach Multiple Duo for the Holidays, they're at it again.

Gorgeous new Multiple Duos that will leave you reaching for your charge cards and spreading a little holiday cheer in the direction of your cheekbones.

First up, The Multiple Duo ($45) in new color combos.

Choose from....

Copacabana/St.Barts - Glistening pearl/taupe shimmer
Maldives/Riviera - Pink champagne with shimmer/pink
Portofino/Malibu - Shimmering coral/pinkish brown
Maui/Palm Beach - Dusty rose/rich bronze

The best part about these is that you can use your fingers or a brush to apply these anywhere you please.

Love that.

Moving on to the new Multiple Bronzers ($37)

Love the concept of a bronzer in stick form. Love. It.

Nars makes it even better by adding anti-oxidants, formulated to strengthen, support and repair the skin while creating an all-over warmth and sun-kissed glow.

Love that even more.

Fall in total NARS adoration with...

Tuomota - For light to medium complexions with golden yellow undertones
Malaysia - For medium to dark complexions with red undertones, great for tanned skin
Rapa Nui - For dark complexions with red undertones

A great way to apply these is with a skunk brush (a favorite is the MAC 187 Duo Fibre Brush) and hit those areas of your face where the sun would naturally hit. Then almost buff the color so that it melts into your skin.

Perfection.

All are available at narscosmetics.com.

david babaii for wildaid bohemian beach spray

For the past several weeks I have been playing around with a couple different brands of beach sprays/surf sprays. The first one I tried was this one by David Babaii for WildAid.

First let me say...if anything can give me the hope of having hair even remotely as great looking as Kate Hudson's hair (she partnered with David Babaii and has also been the guinea pig for every product in the line) - I'm all over it. And if it also happens to help a good cause - well, that's just the icing on the cake (10% of all profits are donated to WildAid to help endangered animals).

Bohemian Beach Spray is an eco-friendly non-aerosol styling spray that works for all hair types. It can be used on wet or dry hair to create various hair textures and volume. Globally sourced, Bohemian Beach Spray contains sea salt from the Dead Sea in Israel for naturally enhanced texture; mineral rich Volcanic Ash from the Vanauatu Islands of the South Pacific for increased volume; a trio of Blue Algae, Mango and Kiwi that keep hair thoroughly hydrated. Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil, Hemp Oil and Cupuacu Butter further aid moisture retention. This extraordinary blend works together to create texture or volume, while strengthening and moisturizing.

I have tried other beach sprays in the past with results that weren't...well....results. My hair didn't look or feel any different. I can't claim the same here. The Bohemian Beach Spray smells very yummy and tropical, coconuts come to mind first (the scent is strong at first but is less noticeable after the hair dries). It definitely adds texture and volume. So much so that I actually attempted to try out that super cute "I just rolled out of bed and my hair is naturally wavey but not really" look and was able to pull it off, which is impressive because my hair normally can't hold a curl/wave much longer than it takes me to walk from the bathroom into my bedroom....about 3 feet. And it held it all day long. I sprayed it on and then wrapped hair around my flat iron and pulling it through to create loose curls and then finger combed them out to get more waves than curls. I have also tried spraying it on my hair when it's wet and then just styling as normal. It adds a little extra oomph that helps the volume stick around a lot longer than usual. The best part, it's only 11.95!

To check out this beach spray and the rest of the products from the line, check out db4wildaid.com.

gifts for $50 and under...eve lom

There's no easy way to say it, so we're just gonna spit it out...Eve Lom is now available online at beauty.com!

While neither of us have tried her products, we've both heard insanely great things about them

We especially love her minimalist regime and her strong emphasis on cleansing and exfoliation.

Read on...

The Eve Lom skincare range evolved from her cult Cleanser, which Vogue called "probably the best cleanser in the world." The pared-down regime Eve recommends is based on the philosophy that less is more when it comes to effective skincare.

Totally agree with the less is more approach. No offense, but we hate companies that try to push like 25 products for you to use each day.

Uh...right...who the heck has time like that?

Anyway...we're eying her Starter Collection ($50). It contains everything you'd need to start on Eve's renowned skincare regime: samples sizes of the Cleanser, Rescue Mask and Moisturizer + SPF 15 plus one muslin cloth.

Not a bad price to pay to introduce yourself to the line and it'd make a great little gift for your favorite beauty junkie.

Plus j'adore the tin.

Try beauty.com for more information and to check out the rest of the fab line.

jennifer's current must-haves for winter

jennifer's must-have winter picks by beauty in real life

Being the temperature has literally dropped like a billion degrees in the past couple of days,I'm totally thinking about the upcoming winter season.

Because we're always testing out new products, I tend to try something new almost every couple of weeks.

Here's my current faves...the products that I've been reaching for the most lately.

Read on.

YBF Skincare Correct Eye Cream ($150) It's their best seller for a reason, it works. I use it at night and all I can say is wow. Unbelievable. It takes care of the little fine lines, dark circles, and puffiness. I swear to you that it took minimal uses to see results. I literally wake up everyday to undereyes that look well rested and...well...corrected. As it should be. The best part is you only need a tiny amount under your eyes at night...perfect considering the splurgy price tag. ybf-skincare.com

Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover ($6) Love this because it takes off my eye makeup at the end of the day easily and without a lot of rubbing or fuss. It may not be my big fave...Lancome Bi-Facil...but it certainly does the trick for a lot less. neutrogena.com

June Jacobs Brightening Moisturizer ($100) It's meant for all skin types, but I use it for my slightly drier skin in the colder months and at night. I love using it in conjunction with its companion Brightening Serum underneath. I adore it for its ability to hydrate and make my skin look that much better in the morning. A total splurge, but you only need a little to reap the benefits. junejacobs.com

Clinique All About Eyes Rich ($29) Like it's lighter counterpart, it manages to make my eyes look less puffy and almost erase my dark circles. It's definitely kicked-up-a-notch in the hydrating department...hence the rich part...making it totally perfect for my winter-drier skin. I love applying this in the morning under my concealer. It takes a few seconds to sink in and then everything goes on so easy over it. Love. clinique.com

Kinerase Daily Defense Cream with SPF 30 ($135) Alright, I haven't lost my mind...it's not cheap by any means...I know. But, it works. Period. It's got kick-ass SPF that will protect my skin in the winter sun, plus it hydrates like crazy. Love. sephora.com

napoleon perdis light patrol luminizer palette

The essential product for that luminescent, lit-from-within, sparkle that only stars on TV seem to have.

5 magical, creamy colors that you can apply wherever you want to highlight and add a little oomph.

My favorites are the bottom left (a sort of light-ish bronze-y color) and the top middle (a light pink-y pearl).

Both work great at the inner corners of my eyes...totally makes me look wide awake.

Another spot is on top of my cheekbones...I just pick up a little on my ring finger and pat, pat, pat on top and lightly blend in.

You can also mix colors together to come up with your own divine combination.

It's like cool finger painting for adults.

The creams contain Candelilla Wax, Aloe Vera, Vitamins A and E and SPF 8...so it's great for the dryness of winter.

Even better.

You can find the Napoleon Perdis Light Patrol Luminizer Palette ($60) at napoleonperdis.com, or wherever Napoleon's products are sold.

gift ideas from christine

So, earlier this week I mentioned something about sharing the story of my first Christmas with the hubby. I'll try to keep it short. This was before we were married, actually he proposed on December 1st that year, so we were newly engaged and I was feeling pretty confident about him and our relationship. My birthday was a week after the engagement and he rocked it. A fancy dinner, a print I wanted - he even got it framed and various other awesome things. I was SO looking forward to Christmas that was all of 2 and half weeks away.....

Worst Christmas EVER!

I cried and questioned how well I actually knew him or how well he knew me. I'll explain. There was a smoked salmon....in oil.....in a box....that the cat didn't even go near. There were more but it's too painful to mention. And yes, I am aware that the holidays aren't about presents, but if you get them you sort of expect them to be either a). what you asked for or b). a pleasant surprise - not a smelly fish in a box. And every single year he tends to get one or the other really well. There was one year he did awesome with both my birthday and Christmas, but I had just had our son, so he combined all of those into one great gift.

So to prevent anyone else from being attacked with a "what the... !!" moment, here are some items I think would make lovely gifts.

First, let me just say I read this book from cover to cover in one night and will be doing it again very soon. This book is FULL of great information and how-tos.

Bobbi Brown's Makeup Manual - it is an awesome step-by-step guide for everyone. There is a chapter in there for everything from how to pick your foundation, apply every type of makeup and there is even a special makeup section (brides, teens, pregnant women, etc). This book is $32 but I found it on Amazon for $21.12. It is a hardcover and with over 250 pages of useful information.

Next up, Ralph Lauren's Notorious (which totally makes me break out into song no, no, no, notorious). I have this and I like it. I didn't think I would since I'm not big on the heavier, spicy fragrances especially patchouli, but now that it's much colder out I like it for going out at night. I'm not too sure I would wear this during the day - I have worn during the day but I think for me it's better for night. An addictive sparkling spiced scent designed to captivate with intriguing notes of deep black currant, decadent chocolate cosmos and sensual patchouli musk.Daring. Sexy. Confident. daring, sexy and confident -- with a rich, long-lasting fragrance. I read one review that said it really smelled like cocoa, but I didn't pick up on that. I do agree that it's not as sexy or daring as one would think given the description but it is really long-lasting. Price varies depending on the size and you can find it wherever find fragrances are sold, or online at fragrancenet.com.

Finally, when all else fails....gift cards, gift cards, gift cards. I actually love getting gift cards. Some think they are impersonal but I much rather go in myself....plus I love shopping, so it's like 2 gifts in one, especially to somewhere like Sephora.

I hope this helps someone out there. My husband is aware of this phenomenon as well, so much so, he just asked me last night if it was the year for the good birthday or the good Christmas. So there you go. I have learned to accept it, since it has never changed regardless of lists or hints or saying "that would be a great present". And now that our son is older it has become much less about us and more about him.

5 minutes, 5 questions with melissa walsh

Melissa Walsh is just fabulous really.

We want to literally hang out with her everyday and discuss makeup and fashion, braid our hair, and watch the latest episode of Stylista.

Or maybe that's just us.

Anyway, we have a feeling that after you read her interview...you're going to want to clear out your calender too.

Read on darlings.

1. What makeup trends are you loving for fall and winter?

My trends for this Fall and Winter are creamy skin that is semi matte.

Normally people go for a full matte look during the winter but I think a little bit of a glow is good anytime!

The Luminizing Moisture Tint by Jouer is great. It gives a lovely sheen, provides enough coverage, and has the all important SPF 20 which is essential even in Winter!

Put a light dusting of powder over it and you still have a glow but one that isn't shiny.

For eyes I like a neutral soft matte eye (grey or brown - Urban Decay has a great matte selection for this) with a flash of shimmering color along the top lashline - you could go for amethyst, emerald or sapphire for a little bit of subtle drama or if you want to still keep within the neutral theme a shimmering taupe or gunmetal.

Cheeks should be kept simple with a sheer wash of color in pink (Catalina blush by Cargo is a particular favorite) or nude depending on how much color you prefer.

Lips should be a stain - sheer berry would complement the look perfectly with a touch of balm to stop them from getting dry.

2. What are your top 5 can't-do-without beauty essentials?

1. Alpha Derma CE moisturizer by Janson Beckett - the most unbelievable moisturizer I've EVER come across. It literally smoothes out fine lines before your eyes and creates a great base for foundation.

2. Hourglass Veil Fluid Makeup - The smoothest, most flawless base that still looks like skin. I use this on all my clients and myself!

3. Fresh Firebird Mascara - gives the kind of lashes I love! Very dark, long and fluffy and no clogs.

4. Smashbox Soft Lights - is a shimmering powder with a multitude of uses. I use it to highlight cheeks and brow bones, all over for glow, as a blusher and a shimmer on eyelids.

5. Freeze 24/7 Lip Plumper - this actually works! I've tried every lip plumper known to man and this does what it says. It gives a plump, shiny mouth with your own shade of rosy glow.

melissa's top 5 by beauty in real life

3. Can you give us some quick tips to emphasize our eyes?

This is my really quick secret to define eyes: Take Laura Mercier's Smoky Eyeliner Brush and dip just the tip into matte black or matte dark brown eyeshadow, then close the eye that you are working on and wiggle it into the lashline, back and forth across the whole line. When you open your eye smudge the excess with a cotton swab or remove it with a swab dipped in concealer for a subtler look, add mascara and voila! Instant definition! I've timed myself and I can do it in under 2 minutes!

4. What are some of your ideas for beauty on the cheap?

First of all don't be afraid to shop in drugstores! They have some great products that have multi-uses and are very cost effective.

I love Bio Oil - you can use it as a bath oil, on your face as a boost if it's dry and my particular favorite, on your legs and arms for a nice sheen for nights out. It's reasonably priced and a little goes a long way.

Cornsilk is a great inexpensive product - it's a loose powder that suits every skin tone, keeps shine at bay and the matte version even gives some coverage.

I also love Covergirl Line Exact - if I buy something more than once it means it's really good! It gives a solid deep line, that stays put and the shape of the pen makes it very easy to apply.

Another tip is to get a creamy pink, peach or berry shade lipstick that you can use as a cream blush, a lipstain if you blot it or as a lipstick of course!

Most of the mascaras from brands like Revlon and L'Oreal are good too, just pick the formula for the effect you desire i.e. volume, length or curl - some have all three!

5. What's the best piece of beauty advice you've ever received?

Don't sleep in your makeup! Keep makeup removing wipes next to your bed for those nights when you are just too tired to wash your face, and a smile makes everyone attractive!

See what we mean?

Love. Her.

If you'd like to find out a little more about her or see some of her work, head on over to beautyandphoto.com.

By Terry VIP Skin Expert - Peace and Glow ($65) promises to deliver a draining massage application that stimulates micro-circulation, relaxes skin tissues, softens signs of fatigue, and has an instant anti-stress effect.

I love it because it's relaxing and the sensation of moving the cool-to-the-touch roller ball all over my face, makes it feel almost Zen-like.

My favorite way to use it is at night and in the morning, under my eyes. It immediately makes the skin under there feel soft and provides a de-puffifying action to the bags that sometimes like to appear out of nowhere.

Definitely a bit of a splurge, but you get a lot of product for the money.

Love.

copper diamond shimmer brick compact

So, Big L volunteered me to make the turkey dinner for Thanksgiving this year.

Thanks honey.

I mean, I really didn't want to head on over to someone's house with a side platter or two and maybe a homemade pie.

No...that would be too easy.

I really wanted to sweat to death in our kitchen, constantly checking the turkey to make sure that it's cooking well and that none of our guests will end up in the hospital later...leaving me the star of one of those fun family stories later on down the road.

You know like...hey, remember the time that Jenn cooked the turkey and we ended up with salmonella poisoning? Remember?

Good times.

While the turkey may drive me crazy, this drives me insane with love.

Bobbi Brown Copper Diamond Shimmer Brick Compact ($40) is a great little goody that delivers that gorgeous glowy look that's just wow.

It's the perfect combo of colors that melds together to highlight your face wherever you please.

So easy to use, just grab a big fluffy powder brush...or I use her Face Blender Brush ($40)...and just lightly apply where you want a subtle little pop.

I love to apply it after my blush, just a dusting on top of my cheekbones, my nose and chin. The trick (again as always darlings) is to start off with the lightest touch and then add more if needed.

Be careful. As with anything it's easy to go from innocent and ethereal...to hello-I'm-your-hooker-for-this-evening.

Trust in that.

Available at any Bobbi Brown counter or bobbibrowncosmetics.com.

the holidays with bumble and bumble

Yesterday I was flipping through one of about a hundred magazines I have lying around the house and it was listing gifts for various prices. I saw the bumble and bumble bandball (think rubber band ball but with pontytail holders) and I thought it was awesome.

Turns out bumble and bumble has 3 awesome holiday gift options....pay attention hubby (one day this month I will share the story of my first Christmas with the hubby - it's been long enough that it's almost funny now....almost).

First, Bb.Bandball (pictured right), a ball of cheer that’s not only decorative but useful, boasting 100 bright elastics. So how happy would you be if this turned up in your stocking this year? And it's only $20.

Next up is the Creme de Coco Box (pictured left) for $50. It contains Creme de Coco Shampoo, Creme de Coco Conditioner and Brilliantine.
This cleansing and conditioning duo takes unusual advantage of the hairy fruit by incorporating coconut oil in its purest form to condition and restore moisture. Brilliantine adds extra sheen and definition. And the cover of the box shows the 30-piece bobby pin collection that the set also comes with, appropriately named Bb. Pinwheel.

And finally, The Gentle Box (pictured right) is also $50 and contains Gentle Shampoo, Super Rich Conditioner and Styling Lotion. Luxurious cleansing and conditioning formulas impart just the right amount of moisture to chronically parched and chemically addicted tresses. Styling Lotion offers gentle control and added conditioning. And on the cover of this one is the Bb.Bandwheel, this set offers 30 brilliantly-hued elastics.

The limited edition hair baubles were designed exclusively for Bumble and bumble by artist, inventor and lover of functional objects, Piet Houtenbos (son of Hair Hero Christiaan). The boxes (designed by resident Bumble and bumble artist Gillian Haro) feature illustrations of hair tools that look like something you’d discover in a curiosities shop – in a mad mix of fun, festive, carnival colors.

To get your hands on a gift box or big ball of hair elastics you can either order by phone at
1.888.7Bumble or visit bumbleandbumble.com to find a Bb.Network Salon in your area or to order directly.

shopsmart magazine...uncovers the best blowdryers and hair straighteners for the money

The brilliant minds behind Shop Smart magazine, got together to determine what were the top rated blow dryers and hair straighteners.

Then to up the ante, they decided to put some mascaras to the test.

Which ones made the cut?

Here's a sneak peek...

Blow Dryers

ShopSmart tested 10 models of blow dryers on swatches of human hair in an environment chamber (to keep temperature and humidity steady). Additionally, a panel of 10 staffers used the dryers at home.

Despite big differences in price and wattage (ranging from 1,300 to 1,875), drying time did not vary much. But once noise and other features were factored in, ShopSmart found three standouts.

ShopSmart’s smart splurges include the CHI Pro Dryer GF 1505 ($135) and Bespoke Labs T3 Featherweight 83808-se ($200). The bargain buy, Revlon’s Ionic Ceramic Pro Stylist RV484 ($20), had one bonus the pricey dryers lacked, separate heat and speed settings so you can control temperature and airflow. It, along with the CHI, comes with a diffuser and concentrator.

Straightening Irons

Nine straightening irons were tested in a humidity chamber and nine staffers tried them at home. Results of in-house tests and user feedback revealed that these products claims of ionic, tourmaline and nano silver technology did not make a difference in straightening performance.

ShopSmart’s choice for smart splurge, the Infiniti Nano Silver by Conair SS9 ($100), had all three features, but the bargain buy, Revlon Perfect Heat Ceramic RVST2001C ($30), had none. Paying a higher price also did not guarantee a better straightener and neither did the brand names. Conair was the maker of the top and bottom rated models while the CHI Ceramic GF-1001 ($130) was the second-most-expensive straightener tested but did not rate anywhere near the top.

Mascaras

Thirty-four women tested 16 lengthening and/or thickening formulas of mascara.

While the top-rated wand was the more expensive, Lancôme Definicils ($24), another very good choice was the affordable Max Factor Lash Perfection Volume Couture ($7).

Another surprise was how beauty magazine staple Maybelline Great Lash Washable Mascara fared in the tests. While it rated very good overall, several panelists said it was nothing special and some complained about clumps.

Be sure to check out the full reports on blow dryers, straightening irons and mascaras in the January 2009 issue of ShopSmart magazine.

kiehl's new body scrubs and liquid hand soaps

We've died and gone to fragrance heaven.

Just in time for the holidays, Kiehl's has released scented body scrubs to match the aromas of some of their best selling body lotions.

Kiehl's Gently Exfoliating Body Scrubs ($25) are now available in Lavender, Coriander and Grapefruit – as well as Pear Tree Corner. the introduction of scented body scrubs expands the custom gifting options, making them perfect for a holiday gift, or just to hog all to yourself...our favorite option btw.

These scrubs are said to:

* Exfoliate the skin for an even texture, leaving it smoothed, softened and lightly scented
* Help prevent dryness
* Help relieve minor irritation and itching due to dry skin
* Provide a gentle, yet effective scrubbing effect
* Contain key ingredients like Natural Loofah, Oatmeal, Aloe, and Chamomile

Another delish idea is their Scented Liquid Hand Soaps ($15.50).

You can choose from three yummy Kiehl’s scents – Grapefruit, Coriander and Pear Tree Corner – in an entirely new formulation.

Perfect for the kitchen or a guest bathroom, these hand cleansers are gentle enough for daily use, yet efficacious – assuring that active hands are properly cared for.

Great for the germ filled holidays.

Plus they are:

* A gentle, yet effective cleanser – ideal for regular, daily use
* Formulated with emollient humectants which absorb moisture to skin, preventing dryness and leaving skin soft and lightly scented
* Chock full of great things like Vitamin E and Aloe Vera to soothe and protect distressed skin, particularly beneficial in colder months
* Biodegradable and paraben-free formula - uses a gentle cleansing agent with coconut-derived cleansers

For more info or to purchase, try any Kiehl's counter, or try kiehls.com.

great gifts for $50 or less...anastasia mini brow kit

Mini Me versions of products just leave me dying every time.

I mean, come on, these are just adorable aren't they?

Mini tweezers, brow gel, and a matte Camille Highligher?

For the love...they are just too cute.

But, honestly, don't let their size fool you...these things actually work and do the job of their larger counterparts.

For serious.

Considering this Anastasia Mini Brow Kit is only $25, it's a great way to treat someone to a gift that guaranteed won't be returned.

Trust in that.

Try anastasia.net and sephora.com for more details and to purchase.

senna mineral eyes shadow trios

The fact that Senna managed to capture the best combination of colors in one eye shadow trio is the reason to check these out.

Senna Mineral Eyes Shadow Trios
($24 each) are the easiest way to give your peepers a pop of color, or go for a subtle daytime look.

My fave is the Cocoa Nudes (seen below). It's the absolute ideal blend of three perfect browns...a neutral matte cream, a taupe, and a rich chocolate...that enable me to create that essential casual day look for my brown eyes.

The shadows go on smoothly, last for a good part of the day, and don't get all crease-y on me.

Hate that.

They can be applied lightly, for a sheer application, layered, or used with a wet eyeliner brush for an intense look.

Don't forget that they are minerals, so that means they're great for sensitive skin. And they're paraben free.

Even better.

sonya dakar clarifying collection

New to the Sonya Dakar family of products is the Clarifying Collection. It includes the Aςaí Clarifying Wash, Deep Pore Clarifying Serum, and Pore Minimizer each addressing all the causes of acne and offers a cutting-edge solution for those who experience breakouts but also have concerns with sensitivity, aging, and pigmentation.

The new Clarifying Collection works synergistically with the existing regimen to address these concerns leaving a clear and more youthful complexion all over.

Created specifically to address mature (adult) acne and rosacea, the Clarifying Collection combines a fusion of some of the most natural and technologically-advanced ingredients found in the Brazilian Rainforest to treat acne and blemishes while soothing skin and healing irritation.

Clinical studies conclude that after 8 weeks of use, the Triple A System drastically reduces the number of blemishes and reduces sebum activity by 70%, and resulting in skin that is less oily, more matte, softer, and more moisturized.

Salicylic, Azeloglicina, and Lactic Acid exfoliate and lighten the skin while working to normalize oil production. Natural botanicals of comfrey, zinc, menthol, peppermint, sandalwood, and orange deliver anti-inflammatory and oxygenating properties that work to decongest, calm, and soothe skin.

Aςaí Clarifying Wash ($45)

This light foaming cleansing gel soothes, softens, and gently deep cleanse to clear blemishes and even skin color. Great for a mature or easily sensitized skin that experiences breakouts. Gentle enough to use every day or as needed.

Our take so far: Even though we've only used it a few times, we noticed our couple of minor breakouts seemed to calm down. We also loved how refreshed our skin felt after using it...cool and minty, in a totally good way.

Deep Pore Clarifying Serum ($42)

This lightweight, fast absorbing gel helps to prevent and clear all different types of acne breakouts. The unique exotic extracts help to heal and soothe the skin while the anti-bacterial agent gets rid of blemishes and congested pores. Use as needed under moisturizer and cosmetics on face and body, day and/or night.

Our take so far: Definitely not like other serums. Made our skin appear more uniform. Really felt as if it was getting down into our pores.

Pore Minimizer ($48)

This mattifying treatment feels like “liquid powder” and reduces the appearance of large pores, helping to diminish breakouts. Organic Silicone and Silica reduce pore size, purify, and minimize oil production. May use morning and night all over or in the T-Zone.

Our take so far: Although we don't have the large pores, our T-Zone can definitely get oily throughout the day. This helped keep the oiliness at bay, while feeling like we had nothing on.

We're still in the testing phase, so we'll be sure to get back to you after a couple more weeks!

5 minutes, 5 questions with guido

The amazing Guido has taken some time out of his busy schedule to sit down and answer some hair questions in our 5 Questions, 5 Minutes segment.

We are so thrilled, considering how insanely talented he is.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy the fabulosity that is Guido.

1. What hair trends are hot right now?

There seems to be quite a few trends around right now. One key trend seems to be hair accessories such as black headbands, fun colored nets, funky flowers and sophisticated jewels all tied and placed within simple hair dos like textured ponytails and messy knots.

2. We love our chin length bob, but what are some different and easy ways to style it besides straight?

Try using Redken fabricate 03 heat-active texturizer (pictured right) on damp hair and rough dry with fingers, often 'scrunching' to promote movement. Pick-up random sections and loosely wrap around a small curling iron and brush out for a great rock chick look!

3. What's a quick and easy style a person with shoulder length (or longer) hair can do before heading out?

Use Redken thickening lotion 06 body builder (pictured left) on damp hair and rough dry with fingers. Backcomb the crown slightly for height and pin at the back. Bring both sides into the middle at the back and also pin. This is a great sexy Bardot-type look, seen at the Peter Som show!

4. How about someone with really short hair...what are her options?

Try exploring different options with short hair. Just because it's short it doesn't have to look 'mumsy'. Look at Mia Farrow's hair in Rosemary's Baby and use the urban experiment 4 grit wax to bring out the texture and movement.

5. What's the best piece of beauty advice you've ever received?

Have confidence in yourself and never give up!

A big thank you to Guido for taking time to answer our questions! For more information on the products mentioned, please visit redken.com.

jennifer's quick picks - mac wipes

This is something that both Christine and I received in our little goody bags, at a MAC soiree during NY Fashion Week.

MAC Wipes ($17) are something that I don't necessarily use everyday, but come in handy when the moment is right.

If I'm totally not feeling the usual remove-the-eye-makeup-wash-the-face-apply-the-toner-apply-the-serum-moisturize-then-add-eye-cream routine, I can at least skip the removing-the-eye-makeup-washing-the-face-and-apply-the-toner part.

This melts off all traces of eye shadow, liner, and mascara, as well as the rest of your face makeup...leaving it feeling clean, hydrated, and refreshed.

A couple of times I even used it to quick clean a makeup brush.

Love!

trends i'm loving...purple as the new black

When I was a kid, I loved anything in the purple family. I had a comforter, rug, and lamp all featuring some sort of purple design.

Cool then, but really a little overkill overall.

Now the color is everywhere this fall/winter and I'm loving it all over again.

With Bobbi Brown's Eye Shadow in Lavender Metallic ($20 seen right) in the back of my mind, I went on a quest to find some more purple goodies.

CoverGirl Eye Enhancers - Quad Eye Shadow in Ice Princess 230 ($5) is a great set of shadows that can be used individually or creatively in a fabulous purple smoky-eye. Try the lightest shade as a highlight under the brow bone. The next color (lilac) on the lid...add the true purple hue into the crease...and finish off with the darkest shade as a liner. Be sure to blend them into one another so it's not line, line, line.

I'm really finding this Stila Eye Shadow Duo in Borealis ($20) fabulous in so many ways. I'm cheating a little here considering the one shade is a periwinkle and the other a midnight blue...but they were both so gorgeous I couldn't resist.

How perfect would this look as a lid color and eyeliner? You could use each on their own for a great pop of color, or combine for the most divine eye.

My last choice is the least expensive of the bunch and definitely a find...Tropez Eye Shadow Duo in Dream Girl is a steal at only $1.99! Plus you can find it at any local drugstore or mass market retailer that carries the line.

It goes on smoothly and can be applied lightly for a sheer effect, or layered for a more intense look.

A great way to experiment with color without taking a major plunge.

holiday gifting - estee lauder collectible holiday compacts

In keeping with their holiday tradition, Estée Lauder has unveiled over 30 new limited-edition solid perfume and powder compacts that will be sure to leave any Estee fan in a tizzy.

Each majorly-covetable piece includes moving parts, high attention to detail and vibrant colors. Many of them include Swarovski crystals and other gorgeous stones.

Renowned designer, Jay Strongwater, has even created six to die for designs boasting his magnificent enamel and stone work.

Two we're loving?

The limited-edition Beautiful Lollipop Twist Solid Perfume Compact ($85 upper left)). Too cute in it's design and even more darling with what it houses inside. The phenom Beautiful perfume in solid form.

It totally speaks to our inner child.

And...

The exclusive White Linen Passementerie Bow by Jay Strongwater ($325) falls on the other end of the spectrum price-wise.

A more elaborate piece it contains beautiful enamel work by Strongwater, divine stones, and pretty silk tassels. Inside you'll find the classic White Linen in perfume solid.

It's definitely a really big splurge, but it will make a perfect gift for any collector of compacts...come on, there's one if every family...or someone who's just a fanatic White Linen lover.

Both should be available at any Estee Lauder counter...although we found these on esteelauder.com and bergdorfgoodman.com respectfully.

chanel precision mousse douceur - rinse-off foaming mousse cleanser

I'm obsessed with lather.

After changing diapers and cleaning up God knows what that stuff was Little L spilled all over the floor...I need to make sure that my hands are clean and I need a great lather to tell me that they are.

It's the exact same way for my face.

Lather = clean.

Because of this, I've sometimes picked up cleansers that delivered on the lather, but left insane dryness in it's foamy wake.

That's not the story with this cleanser from Chanel.

Chanel Mousse Douceur ($45) gives me the beautiful foaming action I adore, leaving my skin feeling refreshed and clean...while still allowing my skin to feel soft and hydrated.

The price is a little up there, but it is Chanel and it is a big honkin tube that will last a good long time...you also don't need a lot of product when you wash.

I've been following it up with the toner, their Lotion Doucer ($45). It's surprisingly not drying either, more like light and moisturizing.

Together, they've unearthed a radiance in my complexion that is just fabulous. Needless to say they are both permanently wedged into our ever-crowded medicine cabinet.

Try Chanel counters and chanel.com to purchase, or for more info.

rooty tooty fresh and fruity

Here are some really great tweezers....they are the Japonesque Fruit Patterned Artisan Slant Tweezer ($20).

I have the pair pictured (tooty fruity) and I really like them. They have pretty good weight to them and they pull each stray hair completely out...root and all. I don't know if I have gotten better at tweezing or these are just really good, but it seems to be less painful with these. Maybe it's easier to get them at the right angle for pain-free tweezing. It also seems to be easier to get up close to the brow to pull the baby strays.

There are several new designs and also several colors to choose from. And it probably should be noted that each pair is hand made in Milan, Italy - it's quite a process to get one pair of tweezers. When you purchase a pair, they have free reconditioning for the life of the tweezers.

Precision-crafted* for perfect balance and alignment, these stylish new tweezers are the ideal choice for eliminating stray hairs. Featuring a colorful menagerie of delightful fruits designs and made of brushed stainless steel, the Fruit Tweezer is finished with a deep, rich enamel coating for a great in-hand feel. Constructed with a hand-filed precision tip, each Japonesque Tweezer is designed for flawless extraction and expert hair removal. Use tweezer point for smaller hairs, while the slanted side is ideal for general tweezing. Either way, the end result is perfectly groomed brows.

For more information, please call 800.955.6662 or visit japonesque.com.

Happy Tweezing!!

new from kerastase...specifique

One of our absolute favorite haircare lines, Kerastase, has just released new products that are considered specialist treatments...meaning they target specific problems of the hair and scalp.
Specifique is comprised of three subdivisions, designed to provide solutions for those with dandruff, oily scalp or thinning hair. In addition to addressing scalp concerns and acting as a treatment line while symptoms persist, this advanced collection allows Specifique to address the problem without compromising the overall healthy look of hair.

Specifique is ideal for those with:

Dandruff An overabundance of micro-organisms on the scalp, specifically yeast, lead to an excess build-up of cell clusters, which eventually break apart, forming dandruff.

Bain Gommage for dry scalp, dandruff ($39) - Gently cleanses the scalp, helps to eliminate symptoms of dandruff and prevent their recurrence. Scalp is soothed and calmed while dry, sensitized ends are nourished.

Bain Gommage for oily scalp, dandruff ($39) - Gently exfoliates the scalp, and helps to eliminate symptoms of dandruff and prevent their recurrence. Provides a healthy look and lightness to the hair while the scalp is soothed and purified.

Fluide Purifiant for dry and oily scalp, dandruff ($41) - Purifies, soothes and rebalances flaky scalps, while calming irritation.

Peeling Purifiant for dry and oily scalp, dandruff ($60) - In-Salon treatment that thoroughly cleanses the scalp and reduces the symptoms of dandruff. Scalp is soothed and calmed.

Oily Scalp
This condition is the result of an over-stimulated sebaceous gland, which produces excess sebum, forcing it to eventually travel the hair fiber and weigh the hair down.

Bain Divalent for oily scalp & hair ($39) - Helps absorb excess oils on the scalp while balancing and selectively nourishing the dry areas of the hair fiber.

Masquargil for oily hair and scalp ($60) - In-Salon treatment that purifies and refreshes the scalp while nourishing lengths without weighing it down. Hair is left feeling natural, soft and supple.

Thinning HairInternal factors cause many hair types to grow differently, sometimes resulting in hair that eventually becomes finer and suffers from loss of density.

Bain Densitive GL for thinning hair
($39) - Soothes and calms the scalp while adding substance and texture to the hair fiber.

Lotion Densitive GL for thinning hair ($41) - Adds texture while generating an immediate cooling effect.

We're actually in the process of testing a couple of the shampoos...and so far we love what we see. We'll be sure to to a full review and keep you posted!

In the meantime, be sure to head on over to kerastase-usa.com for more info, to make a purchase, or to find a salon that carries Kerastase products!

trends i'm loving for fall/winter...dark nails

For me, winter time is the best time to go for the darker colors on my nails. Here are some tips for keeping your color chic and modern...kind of a hodge podge of ideas from Ji Baek, Elle, Deborah Lippmann, and InStyle Magazine.

Keep your nails short - Dark colors + really long nails = tacky...just remember that equation and you'll be fine. Try not to let them get more than 1/4 of an inch past your fingertips.

Think outside the square - Go for more of an almond or (my personal fave) squoval. The harder edges can look too severe.

Watch the clock - Darker shades tend to take longer to dry...says nail pro Ji Baek...set aside an hour for your mani or pedi to dry. Although I have to say that I've sped this process up with my Poshe Superfast Drying Top Coat ($10). A great tip that I picked up from All Lacquered Up!

Keep your cuticles in top shape - This is not the time to let those cuticles look dry and haggard. Make sure they're well moisturized to keep them looking their best.

Alright, now you know the basics...here are some ways to pick the best color for your skin tone courtesy of Deborah Lippmann.

Light Skin
- look for blue-based shades with a soft shimmer. Try Essie's Lacy Not Racy for a fabulous red.

Medium Skin - Think gold flecks and warm undertones to make your olive and tan complexions sing. For a great of-the-moment purple hue try Dior Vernis in Liquorice.

Dark Skin - Lippmann suggests taking it to the extreme in color...look for strong hues that border on black. One to try is YSL in No. 36.

You can read the full article in the November issue of InStyle Magazine, on stands now.

smashbox jet set waterproof eyeliner

Literally the easiest way to give your eyes that I-slept-in-my-makeup-all-night look without the subsequent breakouts and nasty hangovers that normally would follow the next morning.

The trick to getting this to work, is to line the rim of your lower eyelid with Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Eyeliner ($22) in Midnight Black...or any of the other totally gorge colors...and smush your eyes together tightly for a few seconds.

The color will transfer and then do a little bit of smoking out along your upper and lower lashline.

Then take a little of the eyeliner on your finger and rub a little on the back of your hand. Pick up some of this with your eyeliner brush or try a smudger brush like Smashbox Double Ended Smudger Brush #20 ($30). This will help deposit just the right amount of color where you need it.

Easy.

Another of my absolute favorite and easy way to use this is to take a flat eyeliner brush, like Smashbox Cream Eyeliner Brush #9 ($20), pick up some of the Jet Set eyeliner and get as close to my lashes on top as possible....like literally take the brush and wiggle it into the base of your lashes. It's a great daytime look for when you want to emphasize your eyes, but don't want to go all out...you might even be able to skip mascara with this step.

For those of you who really want to do some rocking out with your eyes...check out this video from Smashbox which features Smashbox Studio Artist Hank Hoffman and the Rock n' Roll Glam look from the Sheiki Jeans show.

Rock on!

Be sure to head on over to smashboxcosmetics.com for more videos and to purchase products.

the obama's visit the white house

Loving Michelle Obamba's dress from their visit to the White House?

According to Women's Wear Daily's vp/executive editor Bridget Foley...first-lady-elect Michelle Obama wore Maria Pinto.

A gorgeous long sleeved sheath in the divine bright coral, just blended perfectly with this majorly historic event.

Love.

In keeping with the perfect coral hue...try Bobbi Brown Lip Color in Mango (a bright coral), Orange (a fab pumpkin orange), or Warm Apricot (a sublime toasted apricot).

All excellent in their wearable orange-y goodness.

beauty buys under $10 - avon skin so soft renew and refresh age defying + rejuvinating body cleanser and moisturizer

No, I am not nuts and no, I am not losing it.

Avon's Skin So Soft Renew and Refresh Age Defyling + Rejuvinating Body Cleanser
($7) has wedged itself into a permanent spot in my shower.

It's lather is rich and it's scent is actually light and pleasant. Not at all like the infamous Skin So Soft that your mother (or in my case, friend's mother) would douse you with if you were playing outside at night.

Could that smell be any more powerful? Sheesh.

The scent doesn't compete with any fragrance you might want to use after. Uh...can you say bonus?

The cleanser itself is the consistency of a thick gel and contains micro-capsules which exfoliate the skin and help to stimulate cell renewal.

I love how my skin feels after showering with this...clean, soft, and hydrated. I also love the upside down shape of the bottle, making it easier to get out the good stuff.

You can follow it up with the companion body moisturizer ($10)...which is pretty fabulous. I tried the moisturizer and loved how silky it made my skin feel, plus I adore how easily it sinks in.

It too is chock-full of special ingredients that will make your skin look divine. Over time it promises to minimize age spots, increase elasticity and even out skin tone.

While, thank the lord, I don't have any age spots to minimize, I have noticed my skin tone appears more uniform and my epidermis as a whole definitely feels soft and hydrated.

Right now, on avon.com, you can buy one Skin So Soft product and get the other one for only 99 cents*!

Not bad huh?

pureology hydrate shampoo and conditioner

This is my absolute essential combination for the dry winter weather and end of season fall weather...tell me that it wasn't colder so all of a sudden yesterday?

Big L and I took Little L to the mall for some lunch (Cheesecake Factory...yum) and when we left, we swear it felt like it dropped 10 or more degrees.

Anyway...Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner provide the perfect tag team touch to my strands, as the temperature gauge begins to dive lower and lower.

The shampoo is non-stripping and will not fade your hair.

For me, it even makes the color appear shinier and more vibrant for a longer period of time.

Definitely allowing me to extend my time between color.

The conditioner is the best....it instantly detangles my hair. Once on, it makes my scalp feel all tingly while it's working. After shampooing and rinsing, I leave the conditioner on while I finish the rest of my shower routine...giving it some extra time to sink in.

My hair after blow drying is absolutely shiny, smooth, and soft.

That special I-can't-stop-running-my-hands-through-my-hair soft.

The best part is Pureology is rolling out their holiday sets now and you can find yourself some pretty good deals.

Their Holiday Hydrate Box (pictured above) contains their top selling HydrateShampoo and Condition, plus an InChargePlus Firm Finishing Spray for maximum hold. All retail sized and all for only $52!

If you're a traveler, or know someone who is...or maybe you'd just like to check out some of the Pureology line without spending a lot...here's some other sets that might do the trick...

The Holiday Hydrate Petites Set ($25) comes complete with 2 oz. bottles of HydrateShampoo and Condition along with 2 oz. bottles of InstantRepair and InChargePlus Firm Finishing Spray to finish off your holiday look.

If you need to pump up the volume, look no further then Pureology's Holiday Volume Petites ($23). Complete with 2 oz. bottles of PureVolume Shampoo and Condition, plus PureVolume BlowDry Amplifier, and an InCharge Flexible Styling Spray...you're talking va-va-voom with the volume here sister.
Try pureology.com for more info on each of the individual products and to find a local salon that carries the products.

guerlain meteorites voyage - holiday 2008

Alright....this ain't cheap.

The retail price for this refillable compact is $160.

But...come on...is it not the most adorably-chic thing you've seen?

Instead of going for some sort of mosaic motif, they went with sweet little raised butterflies in shades of pink, beige and white.

All can be swirled together to give you that out-of-the-ordinary glow. Allowing you to appear as if you're walking around in constant candlelight.

Or something fab like that.

Use it to add some oomph to your eyes, cheeks, or decolletage....or any other part that needs some zhooshing.

Find it at bergdorfgoodman.com and neimanmarcus.com.

loving the cover...keri russell on the cover of lucky magazine's december issue

Keri Russell on the cover of the December Lucky is stunning in a modern 40's kinda way.

Her hair is superb and so old-school-Hollywood-but-wearable-glam with the side parted wavy bob.

It totally meshes with the Banana Republic dress...yup, that Banana Republic...which can be yours for $300.

The makeup is Chanel.

For the face they used Chanel Hydramax + Active Tinted Lotion with SPF 15 ($55).

On the cheeks Chanel Blush Duo Tweed Effect in Tweed Corail ($45) went to work for a gorgeous flush.

Chanel Precision Eye Definer in Teak ($28) and Exceptionnel De Chanel Mascara in Smoky Noir ($28) created the most perfect daytime or (in this case) subtle evening look for the eyes.

A swipe of Chanel Aqualumiere Lipstick SPF 15 in Montego ($27) capped off the look completely.

lucky cover-look by beauty in real life

Also, if you head on over to luckymag.com/breaks/luckysweeps, you can enter to win her cover dress and makeup...an almost $500 value!

How fab is that?

christine's nail color of the week...rebel yell

I seriously need a new camera.

This week, I was going through all my colors and then the doorbell rang. Who was waiting for me at the front door??

Meet NARS Rebel Yell. After seeing this color mentioned on several other blogs, I had to have it.

Beauty Blogging Junkie mentioned singing Billy Idol's hit while using it. And it's true, even as I type this I have it running through my head.

NARS describes it as a "dusty pomegranate". I describe it as great mixture of brown and red. It's actually a shade darker than how it came out in the picture.

I just applied it today so I don't know how long it's going to last or what is going to happen. This is the first NARS polish I have tried though...and so far it's fabulous.

Check it out at narscosmetics.com.

jennifer's quick picks

Here's some of my quick picks for soft and positively gorgeous hands. They're what I've been using lately and love...

While I don't do the dishes in the sink everyday...that's what dishwashers are for darlings...I do wash enough things each day by hand.

Normally my hands get all dry and gross...until this. This has been my savior.

Dawn Plus Hand Renewal in Pomegranate Splash ($3) not only smells divine it actually states that it will improve the look and feel of your hands in 5 uses.

They're fibbing...it only took 3.

For fun, you can also head on over to dawnhandtalent.com.

They've launched a fun new site called...Dawn Hand Talent. It features a talented hand contest...hence the name of the site...with short video clips from the contestants. It's interactive and you can vote for your faves.

I'm not going to lie, this stuff is definitely a bit of a splurge, but it works.

NIA24 Sun Damage Repair for Decolletage and Hands ($55) contains the new buzzword on everyone's lips, niacin.

I'm happy because it manages to hydrate my hands and keep them feeling that way all day...through multiple washings.

Oh and did I tell you that I only apply it at night?

So...uh...yeah...it's that good.

It's also said to improve sun damage and provide a more even skin tone over time.

When the cooler weather hits, it's deep berry or burgundy shades for me. One of my recent favorites has been O.P.I. All Lacquered Up.

It's the perfect color for fall and winter and sings along with my complexion. A recent mani made me fall in love and I tracked it down at my local mall.

While you probably won't be able to find this particular color right now, sorry...it's been discontinued, you can find similar colors at opi.com.

this just in...terri seymour's look from the song of hope v event

We have the direct-from-the-source-scoop on Terri Seymour's fabulous look from last night's Song of Hope V event!

We love how she has a sexy night out look, but still looks natural.

Here's the 411 from her makeup artist...and new frequent contributor to the blog...Melissa Walsh.

I started out with Hourglass Veil Fluid Makeup and Veil Invisible Powder to make Terri's already flawless skin glow even more!

On her eyes I used a combination of emerald greens over a nude base.

Starting with Smashbox Eyeshadow in Nude, brush this evenly all over the lid and just into the crease, then take Tarte Eyepencil in Birth of Venus and tract the upper and lower lash lines.

Over the top lashline draw a thicker line of Smashbox Eyeshadow in Serpent and blend up into the nude, put a dash of a shimmery champagne shadow the loose powder end of Tarte Lock and Roll in Quartz in the center of the lid and blend well!!

Then edge the eyes with Bourjois Eyeshadow in Noir Emeraude which is a gorgeous extremely dark metallic green/black.

Finish the eyes with a few coats of Fresh Supernova Mascara.

On Terri's cheeks I used Cargo Blush Powder in Catalina and her lips were lined with Hourglass Trace Lipliner in Bare and filled in with a mix of Smashbox Glosses in Pixel and Scoop.

Don't you just love her?

She is so our new bestie friend forever.

You can find any of the above products at Sephora stores or sephora.com. You can also try their individual brand websites!

If you'd like to find Melissa (that's her adorable little self to the right) to hire her for events or otherwise, head on over to beautyandphoto.com.

viva la juicy - the review

I thought that I could only love my Juicy Couture fragrance, but then Viva La Juicy came along.

For any of you thinking that it's the original with just a pretty pink bow on top...you couldn't be more wrong.

It has some hint of the original, but stands on it's own with notes of gardenia, jasmine, praline, amber, and caramel vanilla.

Utterly yummy, it leaves me sniffing my arm all day.

Plus it has that ability to work in the fall and winter months, as well as the night time in the summer when you want to go for a little sexier and heady scent.

J'adore!

To save yourself a little money during these penny pinching months, try FragranceNet.com to purchase.

They have some great values on many of your favorite scents...I lost count at one hundred.

This scent is only $56.55 as opposed to $65 regular retail at department stores. In addition, if you don't see a scent that you wanted, you can even fill out a form and they'll notify you via email when it comes in!

They also have some other fab goodies going on.

For one, you can enter to win a $250 shopping spree on their site. Plus you can sign up for their coupon list, get free shipping for orders over $70 (US only), and purchase haircare and skincare products too!

I say head on over and check out their wares for potential holiday gifting sweeties!

nars limited-edition the multiple duo

How perfectly fabulous is this?

Two of my now favorite multiples in one place.

NARS The Multiple Duo in Orgasm and South Beach ($45) has me in glowy-shimmery serenity.

If you're a regular reader, you might remember that a while back I tried out the Orgasm Multiple and had a meh reaction.

What the heck was I thinking?

Dear readers, I have to say that I've been drinking from the proverbial Orgasm Multiple fananatics kool-aid...and it's good.

Very good.

While it's not as deep in color as the Orgasm blush that I am a rabid fan of, it still possess that pinky-peachy goodness that I adore....but in much sheerer form.

I pop a little on my cheeks just for a little pick-me-up, or I've used it as a highlighter in areas that need a little zhooshing.

The South Beach side is fab for using as you would a bronzer. Just hitting those places on your face where the sun would normally hit. It too is sheer, so it comes off as a more convincing summery glow in the middle of fall.

Perfect for my more medium complexion and absolutely divine on Christine's very fair skin tone...it warms both of them right up.

Positively orgasma-southbeacha-licious!

You can find these right now at sephora.com and in Sephora stores. It is limited-edition, so you might want to check it out asap. Online Sephora is also carrying some other duos for a limited time too. These are online only duos, so definitely check those out as well.

clinique black honey eyeliner...the review

For the past week I have been trying out Clinique's Kohl Shaper for Eyes eyeliner in the limited edition color of Black Honey ($16). It comes out this month with the Holiday Collection that we mentioned earlier this week. (view the collection here). It is sort of a brown/berry color.

Since I am a lover of the Black Honey Almost Lipstick, I was super, super excited to get my hands on this eyeliner. I have not used Clinique eyeliners before, so right off the bat I noticed it has a sharpener in the lid....love that!! The other thing I noticed is that the pencil is triangle in shape - which is different.

The first time I applied the Black Honey Eyeliner I noticed how much I like the fact that it is triangle shaped. It really helps you play around the the thickness of the line. I actually played around with it on the back of my hand to see what all I could do with it. It smudges really easily - I have been just using my ring finger to smudge out the line and it works great!

And the best part - it gave me a reason to dig out my Black Honey Almost Lipstick. I had forgotten about it for a while but as soon as I put it on I remembered all those warm fuzzies that I had for it previously.

Check out clinique.com or Clinique counters for this and the rest of the Holiday Collection....although it's not up on the site yet, it should be out this month.
