5 minutes, 5 questions with amy nadine

Amy Nadine (seen here touching up Lauren Conrad before an event) is an uber talented makeup artist who is not only Lauren Conrad's personel makeup artist, but is also the lead makeup artist for mark. cosmetics.

In case you aren't familiar with mark. cosmetics, they are basically Avon's cooler and hipper little sister.

The prices can't be beat either.

Anyway, we recently had the chance to ask Amy some questions and here's what she said...

1. What's a great casual look for daytime?

I love light make-up for the daytime... no foundation, just concealer where needed, a cream blush, mascara and a gloss.

2. What are your top 5 can't-do-without beauty essentials?

Top five beauty essentials are
1. Beauty Blender sponge
2. Nars blush in Luster with Kabuki Brush
3. Scott Barnes Luminizing Mist
4. Stila Convertible Color cream blush in Gladiola
5. Mark Cosmetics On The Edge Liquid Liner in Neffertini

3. We know you've worked with Lauren Conrad. What's your favorite look for her?

Lauren definitely has a signature style and doesn't change it up too much. She always wears the following products from mark: On The Edge Liquid Liner in Cleo, Make It Big Mascara in Raven, Face Xpert in Natural, Good Glowing Mosaic Blush in Hush Baby and Glow Baby Glow Lip Gloss in mPowerment Peach (that Lauren and I developed together exclusively for her Spring fashion show last year at LA Fashion Week)

4. With everyone penny pinching, what are some of your beauty-on-the-cheap ideas?

Mark Cosmetics have an amazing price point for the quality. I'm obsessed with their Flip For It palettes because you get so much for $20. I also use Max Factor 2000 Calorie Mascara on all my clients because it is just as good as any department store brand and I can use a new one each time and give it to them that day (because I don't believe in sharing mascaras on people, even if using disposable wands)

5. What is the best piece of beauty advice that you've ever received?

The best advice I ever received would be less is more when it comes to make-up! You want to think, wow, she looks really beautiful... not wow, she's got a lot going on with her make-up!

Okay, it's official, we love her.

For more info on Amy Nadine, head on over to her personal website at amynadine.com. For more info on any of the mark. products mentioned here, or to make a purchase, head on over to meetmark.com.

bobbi brown blushed pink collection

In February, Bobbi Brown introduces her Blushed Pink Collection which includes four Sparkle Eye Shadows that feature a new featherweight formula that instantly lights up eyes with a unique combination of shimmering pearls and glitter. The collection also includes two additional eye shadows, two lip glosses and a new shade of Bobbi's popular Creamy Lip Color. She also introduces a new line of foundation, which will be available in 17 shades, Bobbi's Skin Foundation SPF 15 is formulated with a unique balance of pigments, emollients and light reflective optics that will leave skin looking smooth and hydrated. Skin Foundation SPF 15 will be retail for $45, along with Bobbi's new Face Touch Up Sticks for $22.

We are loving this Collection and the new foundation here at Beauty in Real Life. We actually saw it all at Neiman Marcus this past weekend when we had a much needed "Girl's Day Out". So...it says that it's not out until February, but you might want to check your local Bobbi Brown counter to see if they already have it out. We are so interested in checking out those Face Touch Up Sticks, we'll let you know if one of us ends up getting one.

Click on each picture to see a bigger version. The picture on the lower right tells you how to get the look of the cover - which I love!

For more information on the Blushed Pink collection or the Skin Foundation, head on over to your nearest department store or check out bobbibrowncosmetics.com.

neutrogena oil-free acne wash pink grapefruit foaming scrub

One day while strolling through my way-too-close-the-house Wegman's (the end all be all of grocery stores), I spied this little product from Neutrogena. It is there new Pink Grapefruit Foaming Scrub for Acne prone skin. Normally, I would have thought "that probably smells good" and then kept right on shopping. I have a love/hate relationship with Neutrogena. I have been using their products off and on for years. It's like childbirth or getting a tattoo, during the actual event, you think you will never ever do it again but shortly afterwards you can't remember what the problems was. This is my relationship with Neutrogena...

All during my teenage years I tried their regular Oil-free Acne Wash that did absolutely nothing but dry my skin out so bad it hurt. It took me a long time to realize that it was the issue. Since then I have never tried any of their skincare except for a moisturizer here and there because I am a huge sucker for advertising. Hey... if Jennifer Garner uses it and looks insanely great, I will too, right?! Ummm....not so much.

Anyway, back to Wegmans and Pink Grapefruit. When I first saw the ads for this I was intrigued until I found out it has Salicylic Acid in it. I have sensitive skin and over the years have gotten a little gun shy about Salicylic Acid. But on this particular day it was really, really, really cold and equally windy and my skin was screaming for some exfoliation. I saw this sitting on the shelf all by itself and thought what the heck. What's the worst that could happen - my skin gets even more dried out?

I love this stuff! It does say you can use it everyday - even twice a day. But as I mentioned, I'm a sensitive little thing and only use it a couple times a week...at the most. The first thing you will notice is that it is overpowerly (is that a word?) scented with grapefruit - some days it bothers me, other days I hardly notice. It foams up nicely and the the scrubby microbeads things are awesome. When I'm done my skin has a nice glow to it and I also make sure to use a moisturizer afterwards.

Neutrogena® Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Foaming Scrub powerfully clears blemishes and blackheads with maximum strength Salicylic Acid acne medicine plus an uplifting blast of grapefruit. With 100% naturally derived grapefruit extract and vitamin C, Neutrogena® Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Foaming Scrub features gentle microbeads that smooth away roughness without over-drying or irritating your skin.

If you are using other acne face stuff, I would check with your dermatologist or doctor before adding more salicylic acid to your routine. For more info on this particular product, click here. I think I spent around $6 for it. You can find it just about everywhere Neutrogena products are sold.

creme de corps

Honestly, with this ridiculously cold winter weather we've been having, I literally cannot make it through the day without this lotion.

Whether I use it on my hands, my heels, or the rest of my parched epidermis...it does its job and does it well.

The result is soft, smooth, and hydrated skin.

Did I also tell you that it has no scent at all?

None. Zero. Zilch.

So that means you can use it with your perfume and it won't complete.

How's that for fabulous.

Now, the price isn't cheap...most definitely a splurge...but it's a worthwhile expense in my book. Plus, because it's soooo rich, a bottle will last a lot longer than other thinner formulas.

If you happen to stop by the Kiehl's site, or maybe a Kiehl's counter near you, be sure to check out four new color additions to their totally marvelous lip glosses...

East Village Vibe - think a rich, creamy milk chocolate tone

Lights on Broadway - earthy rose tone with light shimmer

Mahvelous Mauve - creamy medium soft plum tone

New York Nude - medium sand dune tone

Like the other members in their lippie family, these glosses are super moisturizing and will make your pucker sing with a sheer wash of color.

Creme de Corps lotion retails at $26.50 for an 8.4 ounce bottle.
Kiehl's Lip Glosses retail for $14.50.

Head on over to kiehls.com to purchase, or to find a Kiehl's near you.

places to check out in dc

If you happen to be in the DC area and are looking for a fabulous salon to try out, check out the Elie Elie salon in Tysons Corner, VA.

It's literally a hop skip and a jump from our nation's capital in the Tysons Corner Mall...also right outside Nordies fyi.

The salon's owner, Elie Gerdak, is insanely knowledgeable about all things hair and specializes in cutting curly locks.

Considering over half of his clientele have curly do's and some clients even fly in to have him work his magic...he knows what he's talking about.

He recently unveiled a new line of haircare products, one specifically for the curly haired set and one for those without.

We've had a chance to test them out and love the shampoos and conditioners, as well as the Polishing Gelee...which feels weightless on your hair btw.

I'm also loving the approach that Elie gives towards his salon, his staff members are constantly being trained in the newest techniques and you have a choice of having your hair cut by Elie himself, one of his Master Stylists, or one of the New Talents...all at different price points.

Either way, you are guaranteed to leave the Elie Elie salon with gorgeous hair and the products to keep them that way.

For more info on the salon, it's owner, or to purchase products, head on over to elieelie.com.

christine's nail color of the week...opi room service

I know this feature has been MIA for a while. But there was the holidays when I had my entire family here, and my nails looked decent for like a day. And then I redid them but then I.....wait for it......got a new camera!!!! So, I wanted to wait until the new one came in before I started my nail color pick of the week back up.

Also, I desperately needed a professional manicure. This winter is reeking some serious havoc on my skin...especially the cuticles. So, this past Tuesday, after I managed to tear myself away from the inauguration coverage on the TV my husband told me I needed to get out of the house by myself for a little while. I didn't hesitate for a second and shot out of here like a person with a mission. After one of the better manicures I have paid for recently, I decided I really, really like this color. I picked a lighter color to give myself a break from the darker colors I have been sporting for the last few months. I chose OPI's Room Service.

This 2 coats of the color plus a base and top coat. It has some shimmer to it when the light hits it right. It has some pink in it, but not too much. I love this color! I even told my mom to go check it out. I will be looking to purchase this at Ulta when the next coupon comes rolling in the mail.

How about that new camera!?!?! No more fuzzy, horrific pictures. Thank you Amazon Day After Christmas Sale!!

rusk speed freak professional 2000w ceramic turbo dryer

I honestly love this blow dryer. It is by far, one of the best dryers that I have ever owned.

After the Remington fiasco of '08, I decided to move on to better pastures, but still wanted to stay under the $100 mark...sorry, just can't bring myself to spend $200+ on a blow dryer right now.

I actually bought mine at Ulta for about $80 (on sale from about $130) and a little tax. I also liked the idea of buying from a place that I could easily return it if I didn't like it.

Anywho...it's fabulous.

It dries my hair in less time than other dryers that I've used in the past and it allows me to get my hair decently straighter, giving my locks a break from the flat iron.

And my hair isn't dry and/or static-y after, even though I'm using a 2000-watt ceramic dryer...I'm guessing that it's the combo of far-infrared heat and negative ions that this dryer boasts.

The only slight downside I've hear mention, is something my sister commented on...she thought that it was a teesy bit heavy, although I honestly don't think so.

It's on amazon.com right now for $136 dollars...a little too pricey for me. My suggestion is to check out your local Ulta and get this when it's on sale and less than $100.

Either way, I definitely give it a thumbs up and would recommend this to anyone.

nars spring 2009 collection

Yes, yes, we know. It's still insanely cold outside. But, this just might warm you up...NARS is introducing their new Spring 2009 Color Collection.

So think some warm thoughts and get to checking them out!

Hungry Heart - Iridescent gold ivory and pink sand with golden sheen

Our Take?
Um...they have us at golden sheen.

NARS Duo Concealer - $30

Since the skin on your face is not created equal, one shade of concealer usually won’t suffice.

This new palette features two complementary shades that can be blended together or used individually.

Creamy and completely crease-resistant, the Duo Concealer is lightweight but still able to provide smooth, opaque coverage to eradicate skin redness, imperfections, and under-eye shadows.

Vanilla/Honey - Fair complexions
Custard/Ginger- Light to medium complexions
Praline/Toffee - Medium to dark complexions

Our Take?
We love, love, love, love two concealers in one compact...perfect for blending and creating the ultimate color.

NARS Duo Eyeshadow - $32

To celebrate spring’s delicate femininity, François Nars introduces two new shimmery and frosty hued Duo Eyeshadows to the collection.

Egea - Frosted sage and smoky lilac
Hula Hula - Strawberry with gold particles and hazelnut with gold glitter particles

Our Take?
Loving the idea of the sage and smoky lilac. Totally complementary to our eye colors.

NARS Single Eyeshadow - $22

Three new Single Eyeshadows provide all the color combinations necessary to complete your makeup look.

Go for a subtle, natural look with shades of pink and gold or a touch of sophistication with a sweep of the matte dusty red hue.

Baby Girl - Cotton candy with golden undertones and gold particles
Grenadines - Matte garnet
Night Sun - Bright marigold with gold particles

Our Take?
The Baby Girl sounds divine and would look phenom as a sheer day look.

NARS Multiple Duo - $45

This two-in-one convenience pairs the complementary colors of Orgasm and South Beach of the versatile, multi-purpose cult favorite for eyes, lips and cheeks.

Orgasm/South Beach - Peachy pink and apricot with shimmer

Our Take?
We've actually reviewed this one already and simply adore it. Check out the review here.

NARS Multiple Bronzer - $37

NARS extends its Multiple Bronzer shade range with this new hue. Rich in anti-oxidants, this bronzing stick is formulated to strengthen, support and repair the skin while creating an all-over warmth and contour for the entire face.

Cap Vert - Medium to dark complexions with red undertones

Our Take?
A bronzer in a stick is literally to die. Need we say more?

NARS Lip Gloss - $24

Drench lips with this new sheer and shiny shade to echo the delicate and fresh feel of the season.

Sweet Revenge - Sheer pink grapefruit

Our Take?
Uh...a sheer pink lippie? Sign us up!

NARS Lipstick - $24

This new sheer jewel tone adds a pop of color, for juicy berry-stained lips. The creamy formula glides on smoothly and leaves a hint of sexy shine.

Shrinagar - Metallic raspberry

Our Take?
Metallic is still in and we're loving the fact that this lippie is a sheer berry color.

The collection is available as we speak...er...write...at narscosmetics.com!

beauty buys under $10 - belli motherhood moisturizing hand sanitizer

Lately, I have become a tad bit obsessed with keeping my hands germ free.

It could be the fact that Little L's playschool class seems to be experiencing a different illness of the week.

Or it could be that some people clearly do not bother to use good hygiene and wash their freaking hands after using the bathroom.

I mean...really...use soap and water people, it takes like 30 seconds of your time.

Anyway, I normally carry some sort of hand sanitizer in my bag, or keep a packet of Wet Wipes in the minivan, just for those times when I can't wash my hands with soap and water

Lately I've been loving this one by Belli Motherhood ($6).

It has this light citrus-y scent and actually conditions your hands while you're using it. No tight and/or dry feeling after...like I would experience with regular hand sanitizers.

Once finished, my hands feel softer and I feel better knowing that the little microscopic germies have hit the high road.

Perfect.

You can get this online at belliskincare.com, in store at Pottery Barn Kids and other select retailers.

kate winslet's golden globe look from lancome

Hello...can you believe it? Kate Winslet finally got some Golden Globe love at last night's award ceremony.

Walking away with two no less!

As for the beauty aspect, we thought that she looked divine last night and positively glowed. Hair was superb and makeup on point...precisely the way we would want to look if we were heading out for a night out.

Well, celebrity makeup artist Jillian Dempsey did Lancôme ambassador Kate Winslet’s makeup and we've got the scoop on the makeup she used.

Jillian wanted to play up Kate’s eyes, cheeks and lips. She used Jillian Dempsey for Avon Professional Kohl Eyeliner in Black on the upper lash line first and then applied dark brown eyeliner and smudged it on the lower lashes.

Next, she lightly dusted Lancôme Color Design Eye Shadow in Chic on the eyelid.

To make Kate’s eyes pop, she added a few coats of Lancôme Ôscillation Mascara in Black.

Next, Jillian added some color to the apples of the cheeks by custom blending several shades of coral, peachy blushes together.

Jillian opted for a classic red lip and finished the look with Avon Pro-to-Go Lipstick in Cherry Glisten. Kate looked stunning as she accepted the first award of the night for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Reader and still was looking fine when she accepted for Best Actress in Revolutionary Road.

Love.

beauty buys under $10 - sonya kashuk concealer brush

I was in the market for a new concealer brush and I honestly didn't want to spend an arm and a leg for one.

Plus, I've been a little disappointed at some of the selections being offered from the department store lines in the concealer category...the brush part tends to be too skinny, meant for a more precise application.

Something I really don't need.

I just wanted a basic brush that I could use to apply my under eye cover-up.

Nothing fancy, nothing expensive, and I was trying to keep it under $20.

Well, this brush by Sonya Kashuk does that and more.

First off, her concealer brush is under $10...$9.99 to be exact. It's made of synthetic hairs that are insanely soft and excellent for applying and blending my concealer.

The brush itself is a little wider than...let's say...my Bobbi Brown Concealer Brush and I love that.

The base of the brush is curvy for a reason, it fits beautifully and comfortably in my hand...plus it makes it look waaayy more expensive than it is.

Love that.

The fact that I can pick this up while shopping for pull-ups for Little L doesn't hurt either.

Try Target stores or target.com for more info or to purchase.

shobha sugaring kit

I have the Shobha® Sugaring Kit and I haven't tried it on myself yet. But I have used it on....wait for it....my husband....who asked me to!

Back when I first got this kit, I showed to him and he mumbled something and went on with whatever he was doing at the time.

My husband has the craziest eyebrows I have ever seen in person. I wouldn't go so far to say uni-brow, but it's close. For the most part, it looks like 2 very large furry caterpillars sitting atop his eyes. Very rarely does he let me at them with tweezers and I have offered to go with him to have them professional waxed but he's too much of guy to care enough.
So, when he asked if I would try this I didn't hesitate to open the kit and throw the sugar in the microwave and get started. I didn't go all crazy with him, just cleaned them up.

First let me say we made a total mess in our newly redone bathroom. When I left to go heat up the wax in the microwave I came back to his hands covered in tissues and he said he got it on the wall....still not too sure what all went on in those 30 seconds but all I can say is that for it being wax I LOVE that it cleans up with water. Even if you get it where you don't want too on your body you can just apply some water and start over. The kit comes with everything that you need to get the job done. It's a huge container of the sugaring gel, 2 different sized spatulas, 6 denim strips, talc-free powder and instruction manual. You apply the powder first to absorb any moisture, then the sugaring gel. Then you take the denim strip and rub it over the gel and pull it off.

My husband took it like a champ. He drove me a little nuts because he had to look after every single thing I did, so it took a while to get everything done. After, we were done he was barely red at all. The only place he was red, is where I applied the gel twice. He said it hurt far less than tweezering and would let me do it again. I'm motivated to try it myself but I may have to practice a few more times on the hubby before I attempt my own eyebrows. I haven't considered using it for other areas that require hair removal but maybe as we get closer to summer I'll be more motivated to give it a whirl. Also, I should mention that the denim strips can be used over and over again because the gel is sugar so you can throw them in the washing machine. I also should mention that my husband was impressed with the fact that the edges of the strips were sewn so that they won't unravel in the washing machine and will last probably longer than the gel. And for $30 for the whole kit, that is a pretty good deal. I spend a whopping $10 every time I get my eyebrows done and there is way more gel than 3 eyebrow waxings. I think it's an 8 ounce jar.

Here is what Shobha has to say about the kit:
The Shobha® Sugaring Kit conveniently provides everything needed for hassle-free hair removal at home. featuring our all-natural, professional-grade Shobha® Sugaring Gel, this kit ensures a hair removal experience that is not only effective, but sweet & sensitive too!

benefits:

  • free of parabens, dyes, fragrances, petrols, resins & waxes
  • natural ingredients mean natural reactions - which for most is no reaction at all
  • less painful than waxing, with minimal irritation
  • professional-grade for ultimate effectiveness
  • gentle enough for use on even the most sensitive areas
  • detailed & easy-to-follow instruction booklet
  • simple cleanup - just use warm water (or jump in the shower)
  • microwave-friendly
  • provides supplies for multiple treatments
  • reusable, machine-washable, eco-friendly denim strips
  • talc-free powder for safe & effective skin preparation
  • reusable spatulas for easy application
  • vegan-friendly

So a big THANK YOU to Shobha for creating something that will tame those wild caterpillars on my husband's face!!! For more information on Shobha, please visit www.shobhathreading.com.

twilight perfume and nina perfume by nina ricci...hmmmm

I have to admit, I wasn't the one that discovered this...I give that credit to Perez Hilton.

As I was clicking my way through his site, I came across this little tidbit that shows the new Twilight perfume and the already-been-out-for-awhile Nina perfume by Nina Ricci (below left).

So um...yeah...they really are kinda the same...don't you think?

I mean, except for the writing on the Twilight bottle, I'd say they are the same.

I honestly haven't smelled either one, but here's the lowdown on the notes in the Nina Ricci...Calabrese Lemon, Cipirinha Lime, Red Toffee Apple, Vanilla Infusion, Moonflower, Peony Petals, Apple Tree Wood, and Cotton Musk.

All that I've seen about the Twilight one is that it has notes of lavender and freesia.

Least there are some differences there.

You can find the Twilight perfume at hottopic.com and the Nina perfume at Sephora stores.

And before I forget, here's the full article that I found on Perez Hilton...enjoy.

how-to create the five minute face

I've been watching some major TV series marathons these past couple of weeks.

First House, then NCIS, then House again, then one of the CSI's (can't remember which - they're pretty much all the same now really), and now today it's TLC's What Not to Wear marathon.

I love that show.

Love.

If you adore Carmindy (the transforming makeup artist on the show) and want to perfect her 5 minute face...and you weren't one of the lucky winners of her book. Here's a video I found on You Tube that features her quick and easy tips for the essential five minute face.

Be warned, she's really hawking her makeup collection for Sally Hansen (although her products are pretty great) and uses them throughout.

Nonetheless it's still a great video for those of us who literally have a few minutes to get ready in the morning.

Enjoy.

You can find out more about her line with Sally Hansen at sallyhansennaturalbeauty.com.

giveaway with sensa

First, we would like to say Happy New Year and welcome to 2009!!!!

I am not too sure what crazy partying Jenn did last night, but my rockin' New Year's Eve included me and my husband in bed at a whopping 8:00 PM watching a movie and I'm pretty sure I was asleep before 11PM. Oh yeah....I party like a rock star.

Today is a day where many, many people will kick off a new round of resolutions. What is mine you ask?

Well...I'll share one...to not glare at my treadmill every time I walk into our family room but to actually unfold it, plug it in, AND turn it on (yes with me on it). It's going to be hard but I'm going to try. I'll let you know how it goes.

Anyhoo, we also know this is probably the one time of year when every one gets uber motivated to either work out and/or lose weight. Well...we have been holding onto this giveaway for a while waiting for the right moment to share. And this giveaway is HUGE!!

Jenn did a great review about Sensa (she has actually tried it). Click here to see what she had to say.
