Cue David Bowie....Modern Love.

Had Jenn never mentioned that song while we were looking at the press release for this, I would probably not start singing this song in my head every time I look at this palette.....thanks Jenn. And now I pass the gift on to you...... you're welcome.

Seriously though, I'm loving the colors in the new NARS Modern Love Palette. Although I am curious to see this puppy up close and personal, so it looks like I will be taking a trip up to my local Nordstrom all in the name of research, of course.

All of the colors are suppose to be suitable for every skin tone. NARS employed top-ranking shadows, in hues ranging from matte black to shimmering browns to ethereal metallic’s. Each shade was chosen for its ability to complement the others, so you can mix and match for an endless number of subtle or dramatic looks. The Modern Love Palette unleashes your inner artist.

au natural hair styling tips from david babaii

Temperatures around the country have been all kinds of wonky lately.

Some of the country is actually digging themselves out of snow, while others have been sweating from mid-summer like weather.

We've been experiencing the heat...and then some.

The worst part about the heat is blow drying your hair.

Am I right?

There are times I'm actually sweating as I'm blow drying.

So I try to compensate by plugging in a mini-fan to blow cool air as I'm blow drying with hot air.

It's at this point that I really really really wish I had a shorter pixie do again.

To save me from shortening my locks, these fabulous hair styling tips popped up in our inbox...and I am so loving them.

David Babaii (he of Christine's fave product Bohemian Beach Spray) has some great tips for styling your hair minus the electrical appliances and (in some cases...water).

Read on and apply...

Get curls and texture without styling tools

For long hair, follow these steps:

· After shampooing spray your entire head with the David Babaii for WildAid Bohemian Beach Spray scrunch and/or twist sections then allow to air dry.

· Once dry, if added texture or volume is desired flip your head over and back, give it a quick shake.

· To set it all in place, lightly spray your hair with hair spray.

For short hair, follow these steps:

· Towel dry freshly washed hair thoroughly to begin the foundation.

· Spray your entire head with the Beach Spray and allow to air dry.

· When hair is dry apply some David Babaii for WildAid Molding Paste and arrange texture until you are happy with the look.

Keep your hair fresh without a shampoo

In order to avoid excess oil or buildup (and save on water use), use a bit of baby powder throughout the hair acting as a dry shampoo, which helps eliminate oil and leaves a fresh scent throughout the day. Alternatively, you can use a cosmetic damp cotton pad and dab it around the hairline and roots to eliminate any excess oil. If you wish, mist the pad with a light oil free fragrance or squeeze a few drops from a fresh lemon to give hair that fresh smell

Wash your hair the night before and awake up with a style

· Wash your hair the night before to save time and electricity

· When hair is slightly damp, create multiple sections and braid your hair tying the ends with an elastic band (depending on how much texture you want, make the braids loose (less texture) or tight (more texture)) *the braids do not need to be very precise

· Next, spray the braids with David Babaii for WildAid Bohemian Beach Spray and go to sleep

· When you wake up, undo the braids, give your head a little shake, and add in some additional Bohemian Beach Spray to achieve desired texture and volume - this creates a great Bohemian Look.

OR

· Place all of your hair in a messy ponytail - be creative and twist sections tight or loose to achieve various textures

· When your pony tail is secured, spray with the Beach Spray and then sweet dreams

· When you awake, undo the pony tail for an effortless but eco-chic look

Create style for stick straight hair

For super straight hair, it’s is all about using fun accessories. Play around with different head bands, hair pins, and clips to achieve a fun and playful look.

Alternatively, you can tie your hair in a sleek low pony tail.

· After tying it up, take small strands of hair and pin them on top of and underneath the pony tail to achieve the illusion of having volume for those with super straight hair.

You can also try my favorite half up style:

· Section off the sides and top while leaving the back of your hair down.

· Secure the top and sides with an accessory or simple bobby pins.

· Allow a few pieces of hair to fall naturally to give you a soft natural look.

Use items around the house to achieve glam

A new and un-used toothbrush is a great household product; it can be used to back brush close to the scalp area for volume or even sweep away those fly-a-ways. Going back in time, an old soda pop can still do the trick of setting hair and achieving large lopped curls.

Other ideas are to use household rubber bands for your messy ponytails or braids. And, don’t discard those dryer sheets. There is usually some fragrance left over to wipe your combs and brushes to not only freshen them but help with static as well.

Finally, use ribbons, scarves and other items you have lying around (or even ones that wrapped a gift!) to add some jazz to your ‘do. A ribbon can make a regular ponytail flirty and a scarf can make just about any look more eco-chic. This all helps to reduce the amount of household waste and makes for a great environmentally friendly choice for DIY hair.

Do you have any tips for styling your hair minus the blowdryer, flatiron, or curling iron? Just leave a comment below and let me know.

mother's day with bobbi brown

Mother's Day is quickly approaching and since me and the family will be on vacation the week before, the pressure is on to get Mother's Day accomplished before we leave. Luckily both my mom and mother-in-law are pretty laid back and wouldn't care if their gifts arrived after the 10th, but we'll see how much I can get done in the next 3 days.

I know my mom would love anything from Bobbi Brown and right now bobbibrown.com is offering free shipping and gift wrapping for orders over $60, and if you order over $100 you also get a powder brush for free!! And we all know how incredible her brushes are.

If you aren't too sure what colors your mom would like, Bobbi Brown has a new Lip Crayon Trio, which features 3 of her popular Lip Crayons in universally flattering shades. And I just read that she has released her beach Sandbar Soap again for a limited time. I just recently discovered the beach bath gel and I love, love the scent (hint, hint hubby....Mother's Day is Sunday, May 10th and the beach Sandbar Soap would be an excellent surprise).

So get shopping....whether it's for your mom or yourself.....with free shipping and free powder brush, you can't let this deal slip by!

shawn johnson shares some beauty tips

So, if you're a big fan of Dancing with the Stars, you probably have been seeing Shawn Johnson (the 17 year old Olympic Gold Medalist) tripping the light fantastic.

Honestly though, neither one of us watches DWTS, sooooo.....is she even still on it?

I seriously have no idea.

And...really...when I saw this image of her I could not help but think that it looks nothing like the Shawn Johnson of Olympic lore.

Like she's all grown up now.

Anywho...Shawn decided to share some her favorite beauty tips about how she always looks great in the public eye.

And here they are...

Shawn Johnson’s Tips on How to Look Your Best in the Spotlight

1. Wear something that you feel confident in! I love wearing bright colors like yellow since they really bring out my features and compliment my cheery personality.

2. Find a lip color that brightens your smile and doesn’t wear off easily. My favorite is CoverGirl Lipstain in Berry Smooch.

3. Have a go to hairstyle that you know will last through a long day or night. I love wearing my hair down with my bangs pulled back in a clip.

4. Never let your deodorant fail you! I use Secret Clinical Strength Sport because it’s powerful enough to keep me dry and smelling fresh through all of my most important moments.

5. Smile! It’s your best accessory.

I second the CG Lipstain and the Secret Clinical Strength Sport. Both totally keep you in check during the hot months of summer ahead.

Try your local Target or drugstore.com for the goods.

freeze 24-7 eyecing fatigue fighting eye cream

I am all about anti-aging products.

Mainly because I'm getting ever closer to the big 4-0 and I am totally freaking out about it everyday.

Just ask Christine, she'll tell you.

Anyway, when this came across our desk, I was immediately intrigued.

Freeze 24-7 Eyecing Fatigue Fighting Eye Cream ($115) is described as being able to battle tell-tale weariness with specially formulated Hydroptix-171 Youth Boosting Complex™, a proprietary, time-released polymer that works to revitalize skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines, puffiness, bags, and dark circles around the eye area.

Good for me because Little L has started this thing where he comes in our bed in the early early morning hours and goes to sleep right between us.

This generally involves getting kicked in the back, a toddler arm across your face, and even coughing that will keep you up the rest of the night.

Yeah...totally not fun.

Anything that will make the inevitable bags lighten and make the darkness become less noticeable will work for me honey.

What I like about it is that it is not greasy at all, even though it's rich, so it's perfect for daytime use as well as night. It also feels like it's tightening things up once it's on...not crazy tight, but a definite feeling that it's working.

At $115, it's on the splurge side...but it's very rich so a little goes a long way. Plus you get a lot of product.

My suggestion is to hit up your local Nordies, make nice to the sales associate, and get yourself a sample to test out at home. Then see for yourself.

You can also find Freeze 24-7 products at Henri Bendel, Bliss, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, Beauty.com, Zitomers, Stanley Korshak, HSN.com, beauty.com, and freeze247.com.

you need to read this...safe bikini waxing tips from shobha

Considering that Christine is going to be taking an island vacay with the fams, this is totally apropos.

I especially read this and thought, yeah I definitely need to make sure that these steps are taken the next time I get some waxing done in the nether regions.

Okay....enough with the tmi...I'll move on now.

Here's some great advice from Shobha Tummala Founder and CEO of Shobha, to get you ready for bikini season safely and hygienically.

Here's a little quote from Tummala that will really get you thinking about times that you've thrown caution to the wind and plunked yourself down on some random waxing chair...we provide our clients with a list of precautions prior to receiving any treatments. In fact, we inform people that waxing can cause minor bumps, rashes, etc. - more specifically, it can potentially result in the temporary enlargement of hair follicles that can allow bacteria, normally residing on the skin, to enter the follicles and cause superficial or deep skin infections.

FYI...I highly doubt that your local nail salon does that. I know mine doesn't.

Can you say ewww?

Read on for some tips from Shobha on safe bikini waxing...

Beware Before You Wax

1. Observe Your Surroundings – similar to preventing infection during a manicure or pedicure, waxing facilities must be clean and strict sanitary processes followed to provide uncontaminated supplies, eliminating the potential for infection during the treatment process. Your practitioner should use clean, disposable implements or hospital grade disinfectant for any tools that are reused.

2. Steer Clear of Double Dipping - the nauseating truth is that double-dipping is common practice in wax application. This method uses the same spatula for the entire treatment, re-dipping the used applicator back into the vat of wax. This contaminated wax is then reused for treatments on other individuals. Unfortunately, this technique can increase the chances of potentially harmful bacteria spreading from one client to another, which is particularly disturbing when dealing with the body's nether region (aka the bikini zone). At Shobha, their No Double Dip Policy (SM) is strictly followed for all sugaring and waxing treatments. If the facility does not offer such a policy, request a new can of wax at the start of your treatment to avoid contaminated supplies that have been used on other clients.

3. Know Your Professional – by law, your wax practitioner must be licensed with the state to perform professional treatments. This license should be displayed in the place of work. For New York State, you can check online to make sure your practitioner is current with his/her paperwork online.

4. Be Menstruation Free – generally, it is best to get a bikini wax at least a few days before or after your period. The closer the treatment is to your actual period, the more sensitive your body becomes because your immune system is lowered, making you more susceptible to infection.

5. Patch Test – before undergoing a full treatment, if you have never waxed previously it is best to try a small area (known as a patch test) first. Wait 48 hours between the test and full treatment to see if you have any adverse reactions.

Aftercare...48 Hours of Rest is Best

1. Be Comfortable – the bikini area is one of the most sensitive parts of the body. Wear loose comfortable clothing after treatments to avoid irritation caused by friction or rubbing.

2. Expect to be Sensitive - (especially if it is your first time) for 48 hours after your treatment the area will be more sensitive than usual. Apply a cold compress and then an anti-inflammatory cream, like hydrocortisone, if your skin is especially tender.

3. Use Warm Water - hold off on taking hot baths for at least 2 hours, but do bathe after waxing to further clean the area, just go easy! Resist the sauna & steam room for at least 48 hours.

4. Abstain from Sex - medical experts recommend waiting 48 hours after any type of bikini wax. This time period is when your body can be most susceptible to outside bacteria, which can potentially cause an infection. for your safety & health, it is better to abstain, but not required. It is really a personal choice, so just keep in mind that your skin does need some time to recover.

5. Avoid Ultra-Violet Rays – steer clear of tanning beds and sunbathing for at least 48 hours, and always where sun protection.

6. Watch Out for Acidic Products - refrain from the use of any products containing acid, i.e. alpha-hydroxy, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, etc. for 48 hours. Acids, although helpful for exfoliating the skin and helping prevent bumps and ingrown hairs after hair removal, can be irritating to the skin during the first 48 hours, since the waxing process already exfoliates the top layers of skin during the treatment.

In case you aren't lucky enough to live in the NYC area, my suggestion is that you find a reputable salon and/or spa in your area.

Ask around or just go by your instinct.

Generally your higher end (meaning...pretty expensive) locations are worth the cost. But still be smart...even those can use questionable sanitary practices.

I suggest asking the receptionist (or manager) when you are booking about what steps they take when waxing. Be vocal and even check out the location in person beforehand.

If you are lucky enough to live in NYC, or plan on visiting there soon, check out myshobha.com for more info and for locations.

5 minutes, 5 questions with joel warren

We recently had the chance to interview Joel Warren, one half of the fabulous team behind the Warren-Tricomi Salons.

Basically, if you want great hair, that's where you go.

And if we could afford it, we would totally be there in a heartbeat.

Just in case you're like us and can't make it to one of their many salons around the country, but plan on being in the NYC area sometime soon, you have to check out their newest venture.

It's called The Plaza Beauty by Warren-Tricomi and it's sort of a very upscale and swanky beauty boutique that houses only the best products, products that have been handpicked with the help of Warren and Edward Tricomi.

It's like having the chance to get their advice on what to use, without having to make an appointment.

Despite how busy he must be these days, Joel graciously sat down and answered some questions for us.

Gotta love him for that.

We understand that Warren-Tricomi just opened a gorgeous new beauty boutique in conjunction with The Plaza (called The Plaza Beauty by Warren-Tricomi). Can you tell us a little about what makes this space so unique?

The Plaza Beauty By Warren-Tricomi represents a union of two celebrated symbols of beauty. Plaza Beauty is an exclusive selection of boutiques purveying offerings from foremost designers and tastemakers in the worlds of fashion, beauty, décor and cuisine. Like the other boutiques in the collection, The Plaza Beauty By Warren-Tricomi represents an editorial array of unique and sought after products, putting a total beauty destination at visitors’ fingertips.

What are your Top 5 must-have beauty products for women?

Warren-Tricomi travel size mini iron, Green Walnut Hair Mask, mlab toner and moisturizer, Smashbox Concealer.

Can you share some of the spring trends in hair? -

This summer, I collaborated with L’Oréal Jardin Précieux to reinterpret vibrant floral prints from the runway and exotic petals from the paths of precious gardens to create a bouquet of colors for hair. From pink rose and emerald green to midnight blue, the shades—and their delicate placement—reflect the flowers of the season.

Lately, we've had a lot of visits from the split end fairy. Is there anything you can do for split ends...besides cutting them off? What can we do to prevent them?

To prevent them use a strengthener collection like Warren-Tricomi’s that seals in the cuticle of the hair to prevent split ends.

Last question. We understand that you have several Warren-Tricomi salons in different parts of the country...New York, Miami, Connecticut, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles to be exact. What are some of the differences in West coast and East coast styles in terms of hair?

Woman are woman and they reach for similar styles ranging from the east to the west coast, it all depends on the trends for the season.

If you'd like to learn a little more about The Plaza Beauty by Warren-Tricomi, head on over to theplazabeauty.com.

barielle 60 second mani-pedi

After coming out of the most ridiculously cold winter and horrid beginning to spring, my hands have been drier than usual.

Creams have helped, but constant hand washing hasn't...except for killing the germs that I've been super nuts about avoiding.

That's where this comes in.

Barielle 60 Second Mani-Pedi ($25) takes about that amount of time to take my hands from sahara-like to smooth, soft, and hydrated.

Using Dead Sea Salts and various oils, they manage to work away at any dryness and (after rinsing under warm water) the oils stay behind to hydrate...without leaving my hands all greasy.

Plus it smells like mandarin oranges...I'm all about the fresh citrus smell fyi...making it a really nice little treat for your digits whenever you need it.

And everyone should give themselves a treat now and then...right?

Try barielle.com for more info.

I'm having a serious war with my allergies today and I am losing...badly, so I'm gonna keep this short and sweet.

I like it!

The end.

Just kidding...although I do really like it. Years ago, my doctor told me just plain old Phisoderm would help me out. I was having a serious problem with my face breaking out at the ripe age of 29 and she said this is what she uses - but to be sure not to get the acne fighting one since I'm sensitive to salicylic acid. Well, I listened to her, it just took me 2 years to follow her advice. For starters, I couldn't find it and at the time I really liked my cleanser (shout out to gentle foaming cleanser from Khiel's). Anyhoo, I eventually found it and I have to say, I like it. My skin does not feel tight or dried out after washing and it also doesn't feel oily or not clean. It's great! And at $5 a bottle I can see me using this for a long time.

I recently saw it at Ulta with a $2.00 off instant coupon attached to all the bottles, so that would make it around $2 or $3. For more info and where else to purchase it, check out phisoderm.com.

Okay, for real....the end. I need some Benadryl stat and a box of tissues and some tea (are you getting all of this hubby?).

prescriptives in bloom cheek color duo

I've yet to meet a blush duo that I didn't like.

Prescriptives In Bloom Cheek Color Duo ($24) is a limited-edition pair that combines two colors in one pan...giving you the option to use separately or together.

I actually tested the warm duo. One side houses a coral-ish color (looks a little dark in the pan, but goes on definitely more sheer) while the other side is more of a complementary lighter shade that could also be used for highlighting.

My favorite way to use it is to take a blush brush and apply the coral color to the apples of my cheeks for that pop of color.

Then I come in with a smaller, but fluffy brush (something like their Soft Shadow Brush) and use the lighter, shimmery shade to highlight the tops of my cheekbones, my chin, and my eyes. Anywhere I need a little more zushing.

Just remember to use a little...don't go hog wild with the highlighting. There's a fine line between glow-y and who's the chick with all the shimmery crap all over her face.

Try your local Prescriptives counter and prescriptives.com.

limited edition bobbi brown foundation stick compact

My Bobbi Brown Stick Foundation is a definite constant in my makeup bag at home.

They're easy to use and come in shades that match my complexion to a T, a complete no-brainer.

The only problem with the stick is the fact that it's size makes it a little harder to transport and use while traveling.

That's where this new limited edition compact comes in.

The size of the Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick Compact ($22) allows you to take your foundation stick with you where ever you go.

It's literally the exact same product, just kinda smushed into one of her little handy black pans...which can, in turn, snap into her larger palette do-hickeys.

Plus it comes in her insane assortment of shades.

Because it's only $22...and a little less in volume than her sticks...you can buy another shade, either darker or lighter to use as you please. Meaning come the summer when your skin gets a little tanner you can mix your colors to find the perfect match. This would also work at the end of summer when you start to lose some of that color. You could also use a lighter shade to mix in whenever you need it...like around your eyes and nose. Or you could even mix them together as well to get your preferred shade.

The only downside is that you can't just take it and swipe it on your face, as you can easily do with the stick. But that's nothing that clean fingers, sponges, or a foundation brush can't help with.

Try your local Bobbi Brown counter or bobbibrowncosmetics.com.

The line consists of a shampoo (that smells lovely), a conditioner, a masque, a split end correcting treatment (which has my name all over it until I can get back into the salon again), a lightweight leave-in conditioner and a shine serum that also helps with UV protection.

mac a rose romance collection

Here is yet another gorgeous collection from MAC. This is the A Rose Romance Collection, that will hit stores and online around April 23rd. We have gotten a little sneak peek at the line and it is really soft, pretty colors with little pops of color here and there. And it also features a perfume!!

The collection features 3 new Lipsticks, 3 new Lipglasses, 3 new See Thru Lip Colours, 5 new Eye Shadows, 2 new Pigments, a new mascara, a new nail polish, 2 new Beauty Powders. It also features, probably my favorite item of the collection, a Just a Pinch Gel Blush ($18.50), which is a sheer gel cheek blush that gives a rosy glow that blends into the skin and the coverage is based on how much you put on. I will probably go light with it for a more subtle hint of color. There is also a Fix + Rose, which is an aqua-spritz of vitamins and minerals, and is infused with green tea, chamomile, cucumber and rose water to help add radiance and finish makeup. And the last member of this collection is Creations Hue: Dejarose, which is their new perfume. It sounds interesting and we will definitely need to check it out in person.

Click on each picture to see them larger and get more details on all the colors and prices. Head on over to maccosmetics.com after April 23rd to get your hands on this collection or to any MAC store or counter.

new nars summer 2009 collection

Hope you had a great Spring Break! It's nice to have you back.

I don't know what the weather is like in your neck of the woods, but it's not really feeling very spring-like around here at the moment.

When it's not raining, it's windy and cold....blah!

Of course this is the time when all of the cosmetic companies put out their summer collections for us to freak out over...mainly because it then makes us realize that we have only a couple of months to prepare for swimsuit season.

Ack!

Especially as we look down at our pasty legs...nothing a little self tanner can't fix I say!

Anyway....NARS is turning fifteen this year and they've come up with a summer collection that is...well...sophisticated, but colorful...according to François Nars, Founder and Creative Director of NARS Cosmetics.

Here are some of the highlights from the Summer 2009 Collection:

NARS Tropic Single Eyeshadow ($22)

For the latest eye shadow, there was only one blue François Nars had in mind. “The tropics are always inspiring for me,” says Nars. This lush, silver-flecked teal is a precise image of the ocean’s reflective, rolling waves.

NARS Scorching Sun Duo Eyeshadow ($32)

The glazed apricot and radiant orange duo, is designed “to imitate the effect of the burning sun,” according to Nars. The sun-drenched colors allow for surprising wearability. The pair can be blended together to form a rich, burnt orange, or worn in tandem.

NARS Irresistiblement Bronzing Powder ($30)

Nothing evokes the feeling of summertime quite like bronzed skin. The newest shade, a rich golden terracotta, offers a flattering faux glow when dusted across the areas of the face where the actual sun would hit.

NARS Falbala Lipstick ($24)

On the lips, this high-shine bronzy rose lipstick has a sweet, insouciant quality about it.

NARS Outsider Lipstick ($24)

This is definitely not your grandmother’s coral. This deeper, glistening variety is a modern take on a time-honored classic.

NARS Belize Lip Gloss
($24)

The pale pink mauve sprinkled with specks of gold simulates the color of a Central American sunset and gives nude lips a sultry boost.

NARS Tonga Lipliner Pencil ($20)

A creamy, long-wearing lip pencil in a shade of pink amber plays dual roles. Use it traditionally, to outline lips and prevent lipstick from feathering; or color the entire lip with the moisture-rich pencil.

NARS Adelita Nail Polish ($16)

This shimmering pearlescent shade of pink, is simultaneously sweet and saucy, the ideal embodiment of feminine strength.

Pretty much everything can be seen in the photo above...but check out your local NARS counter or narscosmetics.com for more photos and info!

giveaway with bobbi brown and charla krupp

We have a really great giveaway this week. We have 5 copies of each book to give to 5 lucky readers. Jenn and I have both read How Not to Look Old by Charla Krupp (she is a beauty editor and expert, known for her real woman's approach to looking fabulous). And, of course you all know how much we adore Bobbi Brown here at Beauty in Real Life. We thought both of these books would be excellent reference points to jump into Spring.

BOBBI BROWN LIVING BEAUTY

Bobbi Brown with Marie Clare Katigbak

Bobbi Brown began the trend toward natural-looking cosmetics with a simple philosophy: Women want to look and feel like themselves, only prettier and more confident. Today, top editors at elite fashion magazines--including In Style, Vogue, Allure, and Harpers Bazaar--revere her, and celebrities and millions of regular women throughout the world swear by her beauty advice. Now Bobbi Brown has written THE book redefining beauty for women over 40, BOBBI BROWN LIVING BEAUTY. In this refreshing look at beauty and aging, Bobbi offers specific makeup tricks for a stunning face--showing how makeup can solve most of the flaws that many women go under the knife to fix. In fact, the right makeup can create an even skin tone, lift the cheeks, plump a smile...even take years off any woman's face. The key is to use makeup to enhance each woman's best features and showcase her natural beauty. With step-by-step makeup instructions and quotes from beautiful women like Marcia Gay Harden, Vera Wang, Susan Sarandon, and, Bobbi Browns natural, celebratory approach to aging will enlighten and inspire women everywhere.

HOW NOT TO LOOK OLD

By Charla Krupp

How Not to Look Old the 15-week New York Times bestseller is now in paperback updated with over 150 new Brilliant Buys!

Charla Krupp knows that aging sucks! So she's here to help. It's every woman's dream: looking hip, sexy, fresh, and pretty--whether you're in your 30's, 40's, 50's, or 60's. Now it's every woman's necessity: looking younger will help you hold onto your job and your partner--particularly when everyone around you seems half your age. It's about making the ultimate "to-do" list of LITTLE beauty and fashion changes that pay off BIG TIME.

And now for the giveaway details!! We have 5 copies of each book, that we are giving to 5 readers. Each winner will receive both, Bobbi Brown's Living Beauty and Charla Krupp's How Not to Look Old!

jenn's picks of the week

Here's some of my favorites for the week. Things that I've been reaching for a lot lately.

Clinique High Impact Curling Mascara ($14)
While I'm fortunate to have some pretty decent lashes and can go without mascara if need be, I do like to put one coat on just to make things look polished.

What I've noticed lately, is that the lashes on one of my eyes doesn't look as curled as the other. I honestly have no idea why this is and/or why I never noticed this before, but they're definitely a little wonky. Bizarre.

Anyway, we received a sample of this so I figured what the heck and tried it.

It actually gave a little curl to those errant lashes and made them look more...well...curled. The other great part was the fact that this lasted throughout the day until I removed it.

Because I'm not a reader of the "fine print", I neglected to read that this comes off with only warm water. I actually used my eye makeup remover and had entirely no problems whatsoever getting it all off. A quick wash with my facial cleanser and a rinse with water and nothing remained.

Pureology DryShine HairStyler
I've been on a Pureology kick lately and this is just fueling the fire. After receiving a pretty much full jar on a sweet MUA swap, I 've been using it almost everyday.

It provides shine and hold, all while making my hair look healthy and conditioned.

I use it as a finisher after I've blown my hair dry and flat ironed the sections that need it.

A little is all you need...rub it between your hands and smooth it over your do.

Perfection.

NARS Cream Blush in Penny Lane ($25)
I probably have about a million blushers to choose from...just because I have a serious blush addiction.

My faves have to be my cream blushes. They're easy to use and look the most natural on my skin.

This one has been a favorite lately.

It delivers the most natural flush of color and literally melts into my skin.

You can apply it with your fingers on the go...but I use my MAC Skunk Brush to buff the color on.

One word can only be used to describe the result...fa-nominal.

Because I'm so curious, what products have you been reaching for lately? Leave a comment below and share!

chanel summer 2009...cote d' azur makeup collection

New from CHANEL for summer 2009, their Cote d'Azur Makeup Collection.

Starting off with one of my faves, a bronzing powder. Does anyone actually tan in the sun anymore? At least those in the over 30 set?

Okay...yeah...I know there are a lot of you out there...and I'm not trying to point you out...but, a much safer alternative is a fake tan.

And why not pack a pretty one in your makeup bag. Totally ups the glamor quotient.

The Limited Edition Soleil Tan de CHANEL 4 Facettes Bronzing Powder is a quartet of complementary shades – bronze, copper, pink and pale beige all meant to deliver a subtle, natural glow.

Another Limited Edition, their Soleil Tan de CHANEL Precious Bronzing Loose Powder is a lightweight powder formula that will give your skin a naturally beautiful, sun-kissed look.

Soleil Tan de CHANEL Bronzing Makeup Base is different in that it's a light cream-gel bronzing formula, that allows you to smooth on your perfect shade of tan...meant to melt into your skin.

Add a great pop of color to your cheeks with with Joues Contratse Powder Blush in In Love (coral).

For lips, CHANEL is pulling out the stops for some fabulous color accents to compliment your now (faux) bronze glow.

Think juicy berry tones and gleaming sheer shades.

Aqualumiere Sheer Colour Lipshine SPF 15 comes in some new summery shades...Ischia (rose violet), Lipari (strawberry), Porto Rotondo (red), Salina (beige), Panarea (brown) and Monte-Carlo (red coral).

Then there us the Aqualumiere Gloss in Cherry Blossom (cerise), Tangerine Dream (coral) and Ginger Shimmer (copper gold).

For some longer-lasting color, try their Rouge Double Intensite Ultra Wear Lip Colour in Rose Agate (pink-brown).

As always, Chanel's eye palettes are always perfect.

Each shade in Lumiere Facettes Iridescent Effects Eyes in Plein Soleil can be worn individually, in complementary
pairs, or in striking contrast.

Or, for a long-lasting iridescent finish, adorn lids with Ombre d’Eau Fluid Iridescent Eyeshadow in Seashore (copper rose).

Right up Christine's alley...and mine lately...are their new nail shades.

Try their Le Vernis Nail Colour in Orange Fizz (coral) and Golden Sand (copper).

Try your local Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and chanel.com for pricing and more info.

bumble and bumble styling gels

Bumble and bumble has a couple new gels that they have added to their collection. Being an HUGE fan of their Surf Spray, I am intrigued by their gels. I haven't used gel in forever and a day but back in the early '90s I was pretty handy with it. Now, that my hair is finally growing out and will soon be a decent ponytail length, I'm thinking gel would be useful for an all day hold since I have longer layers that might need some help staying put.

Bb. Gel and Gellac are the first gels in the line and have been tested and perfected backstage at Fashion Week over several seasons.

Here are some styling tips from Bumble and bumble and some uses for their Gels:

For females, Bb. Gel can be applied, shaped, dried and easily brushed out to create amazingly soft shapes with memory and hold. It’s also perfect for spring’s neat, simple pony.

Bb. Gel helps men achieve the super slick (but not sticky) Don Draper look. To create the 1960s style, apply and comb product through hair, directing strands into the desired shape. The result is a neat strong hold that won’t flake throughout the day like a traditional gel would.

Gellac is their powerhouse product based on an editorial tool, Gafquat 732, which has traditionally been used to create extreme, shiny shapes for photo shoots, but is close to impossible to rinse out. Our team of chemists solved the problem with Gellac making it removable with any Bumble and bumble shampoo. It’s a product for those who like to take risks and experiment with bold styles.

Bumble and bumble’s newest styling duo, Gels, are now available in Bb. Network Salons and at www.bumbleandbumble.com. Bb.Gel, 5 fl oz. $24, and Gellac, 4.2 fl oz, $24.

beauty buys under $10 - l'oreal skin genesis deep purifying foaming cream cleanser

I think my skin is totally going against the "normal" idea of what pregnant skin is supposed to look like.

Generally you think glowy and gorgeous, not ridiculously oily one day and dry the next.

But that's most definitely going on here.

Yuck.

So when this product came across our desk, my curiosity was piqued.

First off, it's labeled as great for all skin types...hard to believe, I know...but it definitely helps on days when my skin feels a little more oily and also helps on days when it's not.

It contains micro-beads that gently exfoliate and a natural cleansing agent that makes my skin feel super clean without feeling stripped.

I tend to use it only once a day...generally at night, after removing my eye makeup.

Use it on wet skin and massage in circles, then rinse. After using, I dry my skin and apply my fave La Mer cream (the original), some under eye cream and then that's it.

Quick, easy and simple...just the kind of routine I adore.

The icing on the cake is that my skin has definitely started looking better and a little more even toned.

Considering it's also under $10...I've seen it for about $8 actually...I also don't feel so horrible being it's literally going down the drain after I use it.

per-fekt skin perfection gel

Hello all!!!

It's been ages since I've posted a review...honestly it has. Thank God for Christine and her tireless efforts to cover my tushie.

I figured that now is the best time as any to set the record straight (if you will) and let you know the real reason for my tad bit of slacking.

You see...Big L and I are expecting another little one who should be arriving this summer.

This time around (pregnancy wise) I've had continuous morning sickness and just recently got over a wicked case of the stomach yucks thanks to some bacteria laden food...courtesy of the gyro I ate from Brother's Pizza.

Not pretty.

But enough about that, let's get to the product you see to the left.

Per-fékt Skin Perfection Gel ($57.50) is labeled as an all-in-one sheer foundation, primer, powder and color corrector in one.

Alpha Lipoic Acids are there to fight aging and Vitamins A & E are meant to repair and protect skin from future environmental damage. The talc, oil, wax, fragrance and paraben–free formula is also available in 5 shades.

Understand that this is sheer. I mean sheer sheer. Meaning if you have some blemishes or other major skin issues, this won't hide them. But for the bit of redness around my nose and other slight imperfections, it definitely helped to make things look more even.

I also liked how it made my skin feel smooth and also provided a nice foundation for color.

Is it enough to make me give up my beloved Bobbi Brown foundation stick? Probably not.

But that's me.

In all reality, it's definitely a splurge at almost $58, so I would suggest testing some out for yourself before making the jump. Just to make sure that this is for you.

Find it at your local Sephora, sephora.com, HSN, Takashimaya, Fred Segal, and Perfektbeauty.com.

customize, simplify and organize with bobbi brown

I feel a major shopping trip to Nordstrom's or Neiman's coming on....I am loving this new collection. I love the idea of everything being able to pop into the empty palettes to create your own. I have a 6 square palette - which set me back a whopping $10. The foundation stick has my name all over, as does one (maybe 2) of those lip quads. You can also click on the pictures above for a larger image. Here's the info....

Beginning in April, Bobbi introduces her new Customize.Simplify.Organize Collection which is designed to work with her customizable palette system. For the first time ever, take your personalized foundation, blush, eye shadow and lip products with you wherever you go in a convenient compact! Please click for here for an exclusive online inspiration video.

Available in Bobbi’s full range of tones and the three new shades (Cool Beige, Natural Tan and Warm Honey), Bobbi’s popular Foundation Stick will be available for a limited-time in compact form for $22.00. These foundation pans can be popped out of their compacts and inserted into customizable palettes or taken as is for on-the-go touchups.

Bobbi also introduces her new limited-edition Lip Quad. Perfect for the woman who wants to take her entire lip wardrobe with her, each compact features four complementary shade combinations handpicked by Bobbi herself. These quads can also be popped out of their compacts and inserted into Bobbi’s customizable palettes and will retail for $20 each.

As part of the collection, two new shades (Pink Coral and Plum Wine) are being added to Bobbi’s Shimmer Blush Collection. A silky, smooth formula, Shimmer Blush is a perfect way to give cheeks a soft, shimmering glow. These blushes can also be stored individually or popped into customizable compacts.

Bobbi has also created a Lip Crayon Trio, featuring three of her popular Lip Crayons in Naked Pink, Pink Raspberry and new shade Sugar Blush and a custom size sharpener. The perfect gift for the woman on the go, Bobbi’s Lip Crayons offer the luxurious feel of a lipstick and the ease and convenience of a pencil. Each set will retail for $50.00 for a limited time.

All of these products will be available from Bobbi Brown counters nationwide and www.bobbibrown.com beginning April 2009.

5 minutes, 5 questions with cheri keating...head and shoulders celeb grooming expert

We recently had the chance to interview Cheri Keating, Head and Shoulders Celebrity Grooming Expert.

Considering she has major background in the beauty industry...she was a makeup instructor with Lancome and MAC. And she's worked with some famous male celebs like...Luke Wilson, John Travolta, Jason Schwartzmann, James Marsden, Jon Heder, Seth Rogan, Judd Apatow and Jonah Hill...just to name a few

As if that's not enough, her work can also be seen in magazines such as W, Vanity Fair, Vogue, GQ, Flaunt, Nylon, i-D, and Details as well as the hottest movie premieres, festivals and on the red carpet of the Academy Awards, Emmy’s and the Golden Globes.

We figure that she really knows her stuff.

This is definitely something for the man (or men) in your life ladies...so read on!

1. Other then normal daily hygiene rituals, what are some things that our guys can do to look a little more polished?
One very important but easy way to stay groomed is to maintain the hairline on the neck in between haircuts. This is very easy to do with a trimmer or scissors and a razor. Another thing to remember is to tweeze or snip away any stray hairs in the eyebrow area as well as nose and ears.

2. What are your Top 5 "must have" grooming products for men?

1. First impressions are important. Having a clean face says a lot. Mild soap can do the trick but a good facial cleanser, a gel cleanser for normal-oily skins or a milky cleanser for normal-dry skins, is vital to keep the moisture in the skin.

2. Use a moisturizer to protect the skin and keep it elastic and tight. Choose a moisturizer based on the following: after washing your face does your face feel tight? If so, a moisturizer for normal-dry skin would be appropriate. If you notice a shine during the day, then choose a moisturizer for normal-oily skin types.

3. Strong, clean hair can make all the difference in how men carry themselves. Use Head and Shoulders shampoo and conditioner system, such as Classic Clean, to get a good foundation for healthy hair by starting at the scalp

4. Using a conditioner is crucial. Most men bypass this step but it only takes a minute in the shower and the hair is much more manageable and easier to style.

5. For men who experience bumps after shaving; exfoliating with a mild granular cleanser prior to shaving will eliminate the dead skin that causes these bumps. Not only will this make shaving easier but exfoliating is an important for the healthiest skin.

3. What's the biggest complaint you get from guys about their hair and what can they do to fix it?

The biggest complaint I get from guys about their hair is “what do I do with it?” The most important thing you can keep in mind when asking that question is, “what would I feel most comfortable and confident in?” Start with a basic cut that is good for you and then go to the drug store and pick up some gel, wax, pomade and start playing with them at home.

A good rule of thumb: generally waxes work best with short hair styles, cremes for thick, frizzy/ curly hair, gels for harder to hold styles, and mousses or spray wax for thin, fly away hair.

4. To pluck or not to pluck...what about our hairy men, can you give them some tips for eyebrow maintenance?
Well this actually goes beyond the “hairy men”. As you age, there is more unwanted hair, such as excessive eyebrow hair, nose hair and yes, ear hair! A good pair of slant nose tweezers is great for dealing with any errant eyebrow hair and a small pair of round tipped scissors is perfect for trimming away excess ear and nose hairs.

5. What's the best piece of beauty advice you've ever received?

Your personal style is all about trial and error. I definitely encourage people to try different things with their hair, their grooming styles, etc. But don’t do it just because it’s a trend. Keep in mind, a trend/fad comes and goes more quickly than you can say the word. Whatever you choose at the end of your day for your grooming/style regimen, just be comfortable and confident in it.

Love her!
